WESTFIELD, Pa. — Athens battled to a 3-2 win over Cowanesque Valley in a back-and-forth affair here Thursday night in NTL volleyball action.

The Lady Wildcats opened with a 25-21 win in the first set, but CV bounced back to even the match with a 25-18 win in the second set.

Athens won the third set 25-22, but the Lady Indians rallied for a 27-25 win in the fourth set to force a decisive fifth set, which the Lady Wildcats dominated in a 15-8 decision.

First-year Athens coach Heather Hanson said her team played through some adversity to earn the win.

“We really need to stop the runs,” she said. “We work so hard to get ahead or come back, then hand it over to CV to get four or five points ahead.

“However. we pulled through and came out with the victory, so that says the girls wanted this win,” added Hanson.

Kayleigh Miller led Athens with 20 setter assists, 14 digs, four blocks and three service aces

“(Kayleigh) has been quite scrappy and very dependable with her serving,” said Hanson. “She served 24 tonight with no errors; that's outstanding focus.”

Leah Liechty had 16 points, 13 kills and six blocks in the win, while Amelia Martin had 15 points, including six aces, 14 assists, eight digs, six kills, and six blocks, and Meghan McDuffee added 12 points (two aces), nine kills and three blocks.

Christina Bard registered five kills and five digs in the win, while Kylie Jayne had four kills and two digs, and Paige McCarty chipped in with four digs.

Athens, now 2-1, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts NTL Large School power North Penn-Liberty.
