OWEGO — Kennedy Wheeler made the state cut time in the 100-yard butterfly and broke her own school record to lead the Waverly effort at the Section IV Class B Girls Swimming / Diving Preliminaries here Wednesday.
Wheeler posted a time of 59.96 seconds, edging past the cut time of 1:00.02 and drawing the No. 3 seed for Saturday afternoon’s finals.
Starr Harford chopped nearly eight seconds off her seed time, registering the second-best effort in the 500 freestyle with a time of of 5:40.1. She came in with a 5:48.09 seed time.
Harford also drew the fourth seed in the 200 free, clocking 2:09.79, clipping more than 0.6 seconds off her seed time of 2:10.4. Wheeler qualified for the finals in the 50 free, drawing the ninth seed with a time of 25.83 seconds to better her seed time of 26.05.
Also seeded in the top eight are Lourden Benjamin and Abi Durgin. Benjamin is sixth in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:06.38, knocking almost 2 1/2 seconds off her seed time (1:08.84). She is also seeded seventh in the 200 individual medley, having clocked 2:30.9. Durgin is the eighth seed in the 200 IM with a 2:34.39 and in the 100 breaststroke with 1:17.54, having bettered her seed time of 1:17.92.
All three of the Wolverines’ relays advanced out of the preliminaries with top-six showings. The 400 free relay of Benjamin, Harford, Lilly Keefer and Durgin is seeded fourth with a time of 4:11.18. The 200 free relay foursome of Wheeler, Willow Sharpsteen, Harford and Maggie Whitley has drawn the No. 5 spot with a 1:48.24, bettering their seed time of 1:48.88. The quartet of Benjamin, Durgin, Wheeler and Whitley are seeded sixth in the 200 medley relay with a time of 2:02.13, which bested their seed time of 2:02.46.
Other Saturday qualifying efforts are: Keefer, 10th in the 100 back (1:03.57) and 15th in the 100 free (1:03.57); Whitley, 13th in the 100 free (1:00.6) and 16th in the 50 free (27.06); Delaney Vasco, 13th in the 100 breast (1:21.3); and Sophia Desisti 16th in the 200 IM (2:47.58).
The finals begin at 1 p.m. at Watkins Glen High School.
