VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S WRIGHT TOPS BOYS CROSS COUNTRY SUPER 7 AS 'RUNNER OF YEAR' (2018-11-26)


WAVERLY'S ACKLEY NAMED 'NEWCOMER OF YEAR'

THE VALLEY — Waverly sophomore Collin Wright returned to the New York State cross country championships, and repeats as the Valley Sports Report boys cross country “Runner of the Year.”

Wright, who narrowly missed qualifying at the Section IV meet, ended up running at States after a runner withdrew. He finished 57th in a time of 18:15.3, which was 13 seconds faster than 2017.

Wright, who led the Wolverines in dual meets throughout the season, was the top Valley finisher in nearly every meet with two or more Valley schools competing.

Wright won the Tom Koons Valley Invite, finished fourth at the IAC Championships, and was eighth at the Section IV Championships.

He also finished sixth at the Windsor Invite and the McDaniel-Baxter Invitational, 11th at the Owego Invite, and was 12th at the Bob Greene Invite.

Waverly freshman Nate Ackley capped a strong initial varsity season with an 11th-place finish at the Section IV Championships, and is the 2018 boys cross country “Newcomer of the Year

Ackley finished fourth at the Koons Valley Invite, and 13th at the IAC Championships. He was 22nd at the Windsor Invitational, 36th at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, 42nd at the Owego Invite, and 68th at the Bob Greene Invite.

This year’s Super 7 is dominated by Waverly runners — five in all, with the oldest being a sophomore.

The remainder of the Boys Cross Country Super 7 is as follows:

T.J. Toscano, junior, Athens: A repeat performer on the “Super 7,” Toscano consistently led the Wildcats in dual meets this season.

Toscano was second at the Koons Valley Invite, 19th at the Owego Invite, 24th at the Windsor Invite and the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, and 44th at the Bob Greene Invite. He finished the year with a 38th-place finish at the District 4, Class AA Championships.

Kaden Wheeler, freshman, Waverly: Wheeler finished third at the Koons Valley Invite, and finished off the season with a 21st-place finish at the IAC Championships, and a 27th-place finish at the Section IV meet.

He was 11th at the Windsor Invite, 25th at the Owego Invite, and 55th at the Bob Greene Invite.

Josh McClelland, senior, Sayre: McClelland, who consistently led Sayre in dual meets, finished fifth at the Koons Valley Invite.

He finished 34th at the NTL Coaches Invite, and 31st at the District 4, Class A Championship.

Brandon Bubniak, sophomore, Waverly: A repeat performer in the “Super 7,” Bubniak finished seventh at the Koons Valley Invite.

Bubniak finished 17th at the Windsor Invite, 39th at the Owego Invite, and 45th at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite. He finished 26th at the IAC Championships and 32nd at the Section IV Championships.

Liam Traub, freshman, Waverly:
Traub enjoyed a strong first year on the varsity, finishing sixth at the Koons Valley Invite, 28th at the IAC Championships, and 33rd at the Section IV meet.

He was also 28th at the Windsor Invite, 53rd at the McDaniel-Baxter Invite, 78th at the Owego Invite, and 88th at the Bob Greene Invitational.
