HORSEHEADS — Waverly opened the 2018-19 season here over the weekend and posted a 1-6 record at the rugged Mark Stephens Classic.

Individually, junior Ethan Stotler went 6-1 with five falls, and junior Rylan Laforest was 5-1 for the weekend.

The Wolverines lone win was a 60-18 decision over Section IV foe Johnson City. The losses were to Division 1 powerhouse Fulton and Division 2 power Gouverneur, as well as Middletown, Wayne, and Section IV’s Horseheads and Chenango Valley.

Chenango Valley 64, Waverly 24
Waverly collected forfeits at 113 (freshman Dalton Manuel), 120 (Laforest), 126 (senior Colby Sindoni), and 152 (Ethan Stotler) for their only points of the match in a 64-24 loss to Chenango Valley.

Fulton 80, Waverly 6
Waverly managed just one win in an 80-6 loss to Fulton, the top-ranked Division 1 team in New York State.

At 152 pounds, junior Ethan Stotler pinned Joshua Lopez in 3:56 for the Wolverines’ lone win.

Gouverneur 69, Waverly 12
The Wolverines logged one win on the mat, and one via forfeit in a 69-12 loss to Gouverneur, one of the top-ranked Division 2 teams in the state.

Ethan Stotler again logged Waverly’s only win on the mat, pinning Joe Cummings in 4:34. Senior Nick Spinner received a forfeit at 112 pounds for the Wolverines.

Horseheads 72, Waverly 18
The Wolverines registered three wins, including a forfeit, in a 72-18 loss to Horseheads, now coached by Athens grad and former Waverly assistant coach Brett Owen.

Ethan Stotler improved to 4-0 on the weekend with a second-period pin of Jarrett O’Connell at 152 pounds.

LaForest also earned a win on the mat with a pin of Kyle Lewis at 120 pounds.

Junior Trent Skeens received a forfeit for the Wolverines at 285 pounds.

Middletown 63, Waverly 16
The Wolverines dropped a 63-16 decision to Division 1 power Middletown to fall to 0-5 on the weekend.

Ethan Stotler maintained his roll, pinning Joel Velazquez in 4:14 at 152 pounds.

Laforest also earned another win, forging an 8-0 major decision over Kevin Loiodice at 120 pounds.

Eighth-grader Connor Stotler registered his first win of the season, pinning Nickolas Rodriguez in 2:57 at 99 pounds.

Waverly 60, Johnson City 18
The Wolverines picked up their first win of the season, a 60-18 decision over the once-mighty Johnson City, which handed out seven forfeits.

The two teams split six matches on the mat.

Laforest won by fall in 3:10 over Patrick Zara at 120 pounds, while senior Cody Chandler earned his first win of the season with a pin of Aidyn Ramondino in 2:29 at 145 pounds.

Freshman Cole Stanton also earned his first win of the season with a pine of Rilee Dean in 5:42 at 126 pounds.

Connor Stotler (99), junior Zack Reeves (106), freshman Garrett Skeens (132), Ethan Stotler (152), sophomore Trevor Meyers (160), sophomore Austin Kimble (170), and freshman Andrew Kimble (182) all received forfeits.

Wayne 42, Waverly 27
Waverly erased nearly all of an early 21-point deficit, but dropped a 42-27 decision to Wayne in the final match of the weekend.

After Wayne jumped out to a 21-0 lead, Austin Kimble pinned Matt Sweeney in 74 seconds at 160 pounds to trim the deficit to 21-6.

At 170 pounds, Meyers pulled out a hard-fought 6-5 decision over Carmen Piccirilli, but Wayne  won the next bout by fall to take a 27-9 lead.

At 285 pounds (there were no bouts at 195 and 220), Trent Skeens decked Joe Eldred in 1:26, and Connor Stotler followed that up with a pin of Ryan Harris in 52 seconds at 99 pounds to pull the Wolverines within six points, at 27-21.

Wayne won the next two bouts to take a 36-21 lead to sew up the decision with two weight classes remaining.

Laforest pinned Wayne’s Brandon LaDue in 2:31 at 120 pounds for Waverly’s final win of the weekend.
