|NTL JV GIRLS BASKETBALL: SLOW START FOR ATHENS PROVES COSTLY IN 28-23 LOSS TO COW. VALLEY (2019-01-09)

WESTFIELD, Pa. — Athens struggled offensively in the first half, and its rally in the second half fell short in a 28-23 loss to Cowanesque Valley here Tuesday evening in NTL junior varsity girls basketball action.
Hannah Forbes knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter for Athens, but it was the only field goal of the the first eight minutes for the junior Lady Wildcats as CV took an 8-3 lead.
Athens managed just three more points in the second quarter, and CV stretched its lead to 16-6 at the half.
Forbes scored four points in the third quarter, and Olivia Bartlow added three points, but Athens only chipped one point off the lead and trailed 22-13 heading into the final eight minutes.
Athens trimmed the lead to five points in the fourth quarter, but missed an opportunity to get much closer by making just 2 of 6 free throws.
Forbes led Athens with eight points, while Bartlow added six points, six rebounds and two assists, and Charlsey Walters chipped in with five points. Caydence Macik had five rebounds and two blocked shots, and Rachel Stephens grabbed five boards.
The Athens JVs return to action Saturday at Wellsboro.
