NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: SAYRE RIDES EARLY HOT STREAK TO 79-60 WIN OVER WILLIAMSON (21 PHOTOS) (2019-01-14)

SAYRE - Sayre used a 16-0 run that bridged the first and second quarters to take control en route to a 79-60 win over Williamson here Monday night in NTL Small School boys basketball action.

Sophomore Zach Moore buried a pair of 3-pointers in the first 70 seconds of the game to give the Redskins a 6-0 lead, and they never trailed in the game.

Senior James Esposito and junior Corbin Brown then scored on back-to-back fast-break lay-ups to give Sayre a 10-2 lead midway through the first quarter.

A Williamson 3-pointer trimmed the deficit to 10-5 with 3:01 remaining in the first quarter, but Sayre reeled off 16 straight points in a little more than three minutes to take a commanding 26-5 lead early in the second quarter.

After a free throw by junior Ethan Miller, Brown notched a steal and an uncontested lay-up, then two more buckets in transition to make it 17-5 with 2:23 left in the first quarter.

Esposito kept it rolling with consecutive uncontested lay-ups off steals to make it 21-5.

With 23 seconds remaining, Miller snared a defensive rebound and handed it to Brown, who went coast-to-coast for a lay-up to make it 23-5 after the first eight minutes.

Moore canned a 3-pointer just 30 seconds into the second quarter to cap the rally and up the lead to 26-5.

Sayre's lead swelled to as many as 22 points, at 38-16, in the second quarter on back-to-back 3-pointers by Brown and Carnrike, but the Warriors closed the gap to 16 points, at 41-25, at the half.

Williamson scored the first bucket of the second half to make it 41-27, but Carnrike canned a 3-pointer to spark a 7-0 spurt. Carnrike then scored on a putback on the offensive boards, and senior Devin Ervin, off a feed from Esposito, made it 48-27.

The closest Williamson got in the second half was 15 points, 57-42, at the end of the third quarter.

The Redskins took their biggest lead of the game, at 72-47, on a bucket by Carnrike midway through the fourth quarter.

Brown led Sayre with 18 points, on 9 of 15 shooting from the field, and 12 rebounds, while Carnrike had 16 points, on 6 of 9 shooting, nine rebounds, and three assists, and Moore added 15 points, on 5 of 11 shooting from behind the 3-point arc.

Miller had six points and five rebounds in the win, while Esposito had six points, four rebounds, four steals, and three assists, junior Zach Watkins had five points and one blocked shot, Ervin added four points, four rebounds, and two assists, freshman Matt Lane chipped in with four points, and Pat Casterline grabbed five boards.

Sayre, now 3-8, returns to action Wednesday when its hosts Cowanesque Valley.
