GROTON - The Waverly boys pulled out a closely contested 3-1 win over Groton here Tuesday afternoon, while the Lady Wolverines posted a convincing sweep in IAC bowling action at Corona Lanes.

BOYS
Waverly 3, Groton 1

Eighth-grader Zach Vanderpool banged out a 630 series on games of 222, 243 and 165 to lead Waverly to a 3-1 win.

The Wolverines won the first game won the first game 795-728, but the Indians countered with a 893-830 decision in the second game. Waverly finished the day with a 813-800 win to edge Groton for the total pinfall by a count of 2,438 to 2,421.

Junior Derrick Canfield added a 504 in the win, while junior Matt Mauersberg had a 468, and 8th-grader Ashton Pritchard had a 420.

Sophomore Richard Stevens had a 412 for the Wolverines, and freshman Cody Blackwell tacked on a 355.

Jesse Vyskocil shot a 574, including a 236 in the second game, to lead Groton.

GIRLS
Waverly 4, Groton 0

Junior Mackenzie Plouse shot a 540, including a 228, to lead Waverly to a sweep of Groton.

Waverly won the first game 742-507, and followed it up with wins of 782-567, and 748-562 for a total-pinfall victory of 2,272 to 1,636.

Eighth-grader Victoria Houseknecht rolled a 465 for the Lady Wolverines, while 7th-grader Rachel Houseknecht had a 445, senior Kari VanAllen had a 383, senior Sarah Uhl added a 381, and junior Morgan Lee tacked on a 380.

Waverly returns to action Thursday at Newark Valley.
