IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: COFFIN PACES NEWARK VALLEY TO 69-55 WIN OVER WAVERLY (2019-01-15)

NEWARK VALLEY - Senior Kyle Coffin got Newark Valley off to a red-hot offensive start, but the Cardinals needed a strong defensive effort in the second half to post a 69-55 win over Waverly here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School Division boys basketball action.

Coffin, who pumped in 40 points in a loss to Waverly earlier this season, and 55 in a win over Whitney Point, knocked down a trio of 3-pointers scored 15 points in the first eight minutes to help the Cardinals to a 27-15 lead, despite eight points by Waverly senior Dylan Ward.

The Wolverines found the range in the second quarter as Ward, who scored eight points in the first quarter, scored 10 points in the second stanza, and sophomore Ryan Lambert canned a 3-pointer and scored five points as Waverly trimmed the deficit to 38-37 at the half.

Riley Malone scored six points, Donovan Beebe added five, and Coffin knocked down his fifth 3-pointer as the Cardinals used an 18-12 advantage in the third quarter to up its lead to 56-49 heading into the final eight minutes.

Coffin knocked down another 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, and the Cardinals made 6 of 10 free-throw attempts, while holding Waverly to just six points.

Ward led Waverly with 23 points, 12 rebounds, and one blocked shot, while freshman Caden Hollywood had eight points and seven rebounds, Lambert had seven points and four assists, and junior Jalen McCarty scored seven points.

Sophomore Peyton Bowen had four points, seven rebounds, three assists, and two blocked shots, and sophomore Kobe Decker had four points and one block.

Coffin poured in 28 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead Newark Valley, and Malone, Beebe, and Andrew Obrgeon each scored 10 points.

Waverly, now 5-7, returns to action Friday at Whitney Point.
