NTL BOYS BASKETBALL: FAST START CARRIES WELLSBORO TO KEY LARGE SCHOOL WIN OVER ATHENS (2019-01-16)

WELLSBORO - Brandyn Tuttle led four scorers in double-figures as Wellsboro built a big lead early to notch a key, 61-48, win over Athens here Wednesday night in NTL Large School boys basketball action.

With the win the Hornets keep pace with North Penn-Mansfield atop the Large School title chase - both are unbeaten in league play, while Athens falls two games off the pace in the loss column.

Cold shooting and Wellsboro's defense limited Athens to just three points in the first eight minutes, and Tuttle knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points to lead the Green Hornets to an 11-3 lead.

Joseph Grab canned a 3-pointer and scored five points, and Tuttle, Andrew Brelo and Hunter Brown scored four points apiece to fuel a 19-9 run that gave Wellsboro a 30-12 lead the half.

Sophomore Benny Gambrell scored eight of Athens' 12 points in the first half.

In the third quarter, Gambrell scored six more points and juniors Aaron Lane and Brady Smith each canned 3-pointers as Athens' offense came to life, but Tuttle countered with seven points, and Tanner Button drained a 3-pointer, and the Wildcats were only able to trim two points off the deficit. Wellsboro led 43-27 heading into the final eight minutes.

Lane scored 10 points in the final stanza, including a pair of 3-pointers,, while junior Damian Hudson scored four points, and freshman J.J. Babcock canned a 3-pointer, but Tuttle scored six points to lead Wellsboro, which was never threatened in the fourth quarter.

Gambrell led Athens with 16 points, while Lane scored 15 points, Smith added five points and Hudson chipped in with four points.

Tuttle pumped in a game-high 22 points to pace Wellsboro, while Grab scored 11 points, and Brelo and Brown added 10 points apiece.

Athens, now 8-3. travels to Wyalusing Friday night.
