IAC BOYS BASKETBALL: BIG SECOND QUARTER PROPELS TIOGA TO 62-52 WIN OVER GROTON (17 PHOTOS) (2019-01-18)
Valley Sports ReportTIOGA CENTER - Tioga used a 22-8 second-quarter run to take control of the game on its way to a 62-52 win over Groton here Friday night in IAC Small School boys basketball action.
Senior Pierce Hendershot connected on a trio of 3-pointers and scored 11 points in the first quarter, and senior Lucas Klossner added a 3-pointer as Tioga took a 14-12 lead after the first eight minutes, in spite of three 3-pointers by Groton's James Lucey.
Senior Derrick Barto scored eight points, including a trey, in the second quarter, and junior Thomas Cook added six points as the Tigers stretched their lead to 36-20 at the half.
Lucey and Kalib Manning, who canned a pair of 3-pointers, scored six points apiece in the third quarter as Groton outscored Tioga 18-11 to close the gap to nine points, and 47-38, heading into the final eight minutes.
In the fourth quarter, junior Sam Taylor scored six points, and Hendershot was 4-for-5 from the free-throw line to help the Tigers preserve the win.
Hendershot led Tioga with 22 points, including four 3-pointers, while Klossner scored 13 points and canned three 3-pointers, Taylor had 10 points - all in the second half, Barto added nine points, and Cook chipped in with six points.
Manning scored a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers, to lead the Indians, and Lucey added 17 points.
Tioga, now 8-7, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Edison.
