NTL WRESTLING: ATHENS CLINCHES SHARE OF REGULAR-SEASON TITLE WITH 61-6 WIN OVER NEB (23 PHOTOS) (2019-01-18)

ATHENS - Athens won 6 of the 8 contested weight classes, and received five forfeits in a 61-6 win  by fall over Northeast Bradford to clinch a share of the regular-season league title here Friday night in NTL wrestling action.

A win  by fall over Wyalusing Wednesday will give the Wildcats their first outright NTL title since 1994-95. Athens shared a league title with Towanda and Wyalusing in 2004-05.

Athens took a commanding lead early by winning the first four weight classes.

Junior Alex West kicked it off tor the Wildcats with a wild 21-12 major decision  by fall over NEB's Henric Ricci at 170 pounds.

In the anticipated "match of the night" at 182 pounds, Athens senior David Galasso, who entered the bout at 20-3 on the season, pinned NEB's Noah Forbes (15-5) in 3:28 to give the Wildcats a 10-0 lead.

Junior Dylan Comstock kept the Wildcats on the winning track at 195 pounds with a first-period pin to up the lead to 16-0.

Sophomore Ben Pernaselli received a bye at 220 pounds to give the Wildcats a 22-0 lead.

In another anticipated match-up at 285 pounds, NEB's Dawson Brown (now 19-2) forged a 7-1 win  by fall over Keegan Braund (18-7) to put the Panthers on the board.

Forfeits to freshmen Kaden Setzer (106 pounds), Gavin Bradley (113), Gavin McGrath, and Lucas Forbes (126) extended the Wildcat advantage to an insurmountable 46-3.

Freshman Karter Rude added six more points to the scoreboard for the Wildcats with the quickest fall of the night, decking Destin Moore in 1:02 at 132 pounds.

At 138 pounds, Athens freshman Troy Jennings scored a takedown at the third-period buzzer to force  by fall overtime, but NEB's Jack Shumway scored a takedown and two near-fall points midway through the extra session for a 13-9 decision, and the Panthers' second and final win of the night.

At 145 pounds, NEB's Dusty Cook built a 9-0 lead into the third period, but Athens sophomore Zach Stafursky locked Cook into a cradle and scored a fall at 5:30 to make it 58-6.

At 160 pounds (there was no match at 152), Athens freshman Cameron Whitmarsh scored a takedown 30 seconds into  by fall overtime to put the finishing touches on the Wildcat win, a 6-4 decision  by fall over Dale Brown to provide the final margin.
