IAC BOWLING: WAVERLY BOYS, GIRLS LOG WINS OVER WATKINS GLEN - ELIMINATED FOR DIVISION TITLE CONTENTION (2019-01-29)

WAVERLY - Junior Derrick Canfield and 8th-grader Victoria Houseknecht led Waverly to wins over Watkins Glen here Tuesday afternoon in IAC bowling action at the Valley Bowling Center.

The boys earned a 3-1 win, but were eliminated from division title contention. The Lady Wolverines topped Watkins Glen 4-0 and were also eliminated from the division title chase.

BOYS
Waverly 3, Watkins Glen 1

Watkins Glen won the first game 953-946, but Waverly bounced back to win the next two games by scores of 1,067-1,029, and 943-858 for a total-pinfall victory of 2,956 to 2,840.

The Wolverines trail Watkins Glen by five games with one match (four games) remaining in the season.

Canfield banged out a 709 series on games of 233, 265, and 211 to lead Waverly to a 3-1 win over Watkins Glen, while 8th-grader Zach Vanderpool rolled a 660 series on games of 193, 279, and 188.

Sophomore Matt Mauersberg shot a 550 for Waverly, while 8th-grader Ashton Pritchard had a 517, sophomore Richard Stevens added a 513, and freshman Cody Blackwell tacked on a 456.

Nathaniel Rose led Watkins Glen with a 625 series, and Wrett Brower added a 569.

GIRLS
Waverly 4, Watkins Glen 0

The Lady Wolverines won the first game 805-762, and followed it up with wins of 830-794 and 938-749 for a total-pinfall victory of 2,573 to 2,305.

Victoria Houseknecht rolled a career-high 695 series on games of 235, 212, and 248, while junior Mackenzie Plouse had a 577 series, including a 215 in the third game.

Seventh-grader Rachel Houseknecht shot a 477 for the Lady Wolverines, while senior Sarah Uhl had a 427, senior Kari VanAllen added a 384, and senior Sarah Wood tacked on a 364.

Junior Morgan Lee had a 465 and junior Megan Lee shot a 463 in reserve for Waverly.

Brooke Usher led a balanced Watkins Glen attack with a 461, while Alyiah Clink-Bentley had a 460, and Nancy Jackson and Nikole VanDyke each shot 458.

Waverly returns to action Saturday at the IAC Championships at 1 p.m. at the Valley Bowling Center.
