TROY - Athens dominated the middle two quarter en route to a 52-24 win over Troy here Friday night in NTL Large School girls basketball action.
Athens improves to 12-8 on the season, and remains alive for a spot in the NTL Showdown. The Lady Wildcats need a win at home against Troy Tuesday, and a Towanda loss to Wellsboro to finish second in the Large School Division, which would earn them a Showdown semi-final match-up against Small School champ Sayre.
Sophomore Kayleigh Miller knocked down a 3-pointer in the first quarter, and four of her teammates added field goals as the Lady Wildcats built an 11-7 lead in the first eight minutes.
Miller hit two more 3-pointers in the second quarter, and freshman Caydence Macik added four points in a 14-5 Athens run that extended the lead to 25-12 at the half.
Miller kept the hot hand in the third quarter, scoring eight points, including a pair of 3-pointers, to fuel a 16-3 blitz that gave the Lady Wildcats a 41-15 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Miller led Athens with 17 points, including five 3-pointers, three rebounds, and three assists, while Macik had 11 points, five steals, four rebounds, and one blocked shot, and sophomore Megan Collins had eight points and three rebounds.
Junior Haley Barry added six points and four rebounds in the win, while junior Kassidy Peterson chipped in with four points, junior Avery Priester doled out six assists, and senior Sophie Adams contributed seven rebounds, two assists, and two steals.
Katherine Polakowski led Troy with eight points and Emilie Cole added six points.
Athens returns to action Monday at Windsor.
