SECTION IV BOYS SWIMMING: WAVERLY WINS 8 OF 12 EVENTS AT CLASS C PRELIMINARIES (2019-02-13)

WATKINS GLEN - Waverly won eight of 12 events, led by quad-winner sophomore Collin Keefer and double-winners senior Mike Atanasoff and freshman Collin Keefer, here Wednesday afternoon in the Section IV, Class C preliminaries.

The Wolverines advance all three relays, as well as 12 swimmers accounting for 26 entries in the nine individual events to Saturday's Section IV, Class C Championships. (The top 16 individuals, and top eight relays advance.)

Atanasoff won the 50-yard freestyle in a time of 22.13 seconds, while sophomore Ryan Bennett was third in a season-best time of 23.86 seconds, and junior Nick Janzen was third in a season-best 26.53 seconds.

Atanasoff also won the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 49.13 seconds, while senior Max VanDyke was second with a season-best time of 54.5 seconds, senior Trent Wright was fifth in a season-best time of 56.99 seconds, and freshman Matt Atanasoff was 12th in a season-best 1:04.22.

Keefer won the 200-yard IM in a season-best time of 2:20.41, while 8th-grader Oscar Williams was sixth in a season-best time of 2:33.52, 7th-grader Liam Wright was 12th in 2:42.76, and sophomore Max Pan was 15th in 2:49.71.

Keefer also won the 500-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 5:31.53, while Williams was sixth in a season-best time of 6:04.8, Liam Wright was ninth in a season-best 6:17.46, and 7th-grader Ryan Clark was 10th in a season-best 6:24.13.

Keefer teamed with freshman Matt Atanasoff, Bennett, and VanDyke to win the 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 1:38.22.

Keefer also teamed with Wheeler, Williams, and sophomore Dillon Madigan to win the 400-yard freestyle relay in a time of 3:55.75.

Wheeler won the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 1:00.06, and 8th-grader Jerrell Sackett was 12th in 1:12.38.

Trent Wright won the 100-yard breaststroke in a time of 1:13.07, while Pan was fifth in 1:17.75, and Madigan was ninth in a season-best time of 1:22.08.

Wheeler also teamed with Pan, Janzen, Liam Wright to finish second in the 200-yard medley relay in a time of 1:57.94.

Wheeler finished second in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 57.56 seconds, while Bennett was third in 1:04.5, and Janzen was 11th in a season-best time of 1:15.69.

VanDyke finished second in the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 2:04.31, while Madigan was fifth in a season-best (12.8 seconds faster than seed time) 2:08.91, and Ryan Clark was 10th in a season-best time of 2:20.49.

The 17th- and 18th-place finishers are alternates for Saturday's finals.

Junior Gage Streeter finished 17th in the 100-yard backstroke in a season-best time of 1:21.7, and junior Brandon Clark finished 18th in the 50-yard freestyle in a season-best time of 29.87 seconds.

The Section IV, Class C Championship will begin Saturday at 6 p.m. at Watkins Glen High School.
