IAC GIRLS BASKETBALL: TOMASSO SISTERS POWER WAVERLY'S SECOND-HALF SURGE IN 72-48 WIN OVER JOHNSON CITY (17 PHOTOS) (2019-02-13)

WAVERLY - Senior Alex Tomasso and sophomore Sidney Tomasso fueled a 17-2 third-quarter run that opened up a six-point halftime lead, and propelled Waverly to a 72-48 win over Johnson City here Wednesday night in its  non-league girls basketball regular-season finale.

Senior Wendi Hammond scored six points in the first quarter, and Alex Tomasso canned a 3-pointer to help Waverly to a 13-11 lead after the first eight minutes.

Alex Tomasso scored 10 points in the second quarter, including a 5 of 6 performance from the free-throw line, and Sidney Tomasso knocked down a 3-pointer as Waverly stretched its lead to six points, at 33-27, at the half.

Sidney Tomasso, Alex Tomasso, and senior Lauren Newman scored buckets in the opening minute of the third quarter to stretch the Lady Wolverine advantage to 12 points, at 39-27.

Alex Tomasso drained a 3-pointer to give Waverly a 42-29 lead with 6:13 remaining in the third quarter.

After a 3-pointer by JC's Claudia VanDyke closed the gap to 42-32 with 4:12 left in the third quarter, Alex Tomasso scored on a driving lay-up to trigger a 17-2 run that gave the Lady Wolverines a 59-34 lead with 57 seconds left in the third quarter.

The Tomassos each knocked down a 3-pointer and scored five points apiece in the decisive run, and junior Gianna Picco also connected on a 3-pointer.

Sidney Tomasso scored six points in the fourth quarter to help Waverly maintain its advantage throughout the final eight minutes.

Alex Tomasso pumped in 23 points, including four 3-pointers, while Sidney Tomasso had 19 points, including a pair of treys, Hammond scored 10 points, Newman added six points, and junior Paige Lewis chipped in with five points.

Taylor Johnson led Johnson City with 15 points, and Celesta Reigdmar added 11 points.

Waverly, now 19-1, returns to action Thursday night against Whitney Point in the overall IAC Large School championship game at Tompkins-Cortland Community College. Game time is 6 p.m.
