ROANOKE, Va. - Athens grad
Kaidon Winters, a sophomore on the RIT wrestling team, opened the NCAA Division III National Championships with a 5-0 win over NYU's Dylan Dwyer here Friday afternoon at the Berglund Center.
Winters, the third seed at 157 pounds, scored a first-period takedown, and led 2-0 heading into the third period.
Winters registered a reversal early in the third period for a 4-0 lead, and rode out the remainder of the stanza to lock down the riding-time point.
Winters, now 32-0, will face sixth-seeded Brandon Birt of Millikin in the quarterfinals later tonight.
CANTON GRAD WESNESKI ALSO ADVANCES TO QUARTERFINALSCanton grad
Garrett Wesneski, a senior at Lycoming College, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 10-0 major decision win over Castleton's Jesse Webb.
Wesneski racked up three takedowns and two escapes in the win, and also benefitted from a pair of penalty points.
Wesneski, now 24-1 advanced to Nationals by winning his regional tournaments, beating the reigning national champ, 4-1, in the process.
Wesneski, the fifth seed at 285 pounds, will face RIT's Connor Calkins in the quarterfinals.
