YOUTH / OPEN WRESTLING: LOCALS COMPETE AT MAWA DISTRICT QUALIFIER (2019-03-26)

ATHENS - Twenty area wrestlers won individual titles at the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association North Region District Tournament here Saturday.

Another 27 local grapplers joined them in qualifying for the Northern Regional Tournament March 30- 31 at King's College in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The top four place-winners from districts qualify for regionals, and the top four there advance to the Middle Atlantic Wrestling Association's Eastern National Championships on May 4-5 in Salisbury, Maryland.

In the Bantam division, local champions were Sophia Barrett of Sayre (44 pounds) and William Chappell from Rome (65).

In the Midget division, Brooks Lathrop from Lockwood (93) took first.

Junior division winners were Waverly's Declan McKee (58), Carter Austin of Ulster (108), Mason Higley of Rome (120) and Matthias Welles from Ulster (140).

Winning in the Intermediate division were Jacob Hinman of Columbia Crossroads (90), Aidan Garcia (110), Scott McCaslin from Columbia Crossroads (128) and Athens' Caleb Nason (220).

Advanced division champs included Athens' Gavin Bradley (115), Waverly's Garrett Skeens (125), Isaac Cory of Columbia Crossroads (160), Gage Tedesco from Waverly (189) and Nik Polzella from Athens (285).

In the Elite division, winners were Waverly's Austin Lee Kimble (160), Athens' Alex West (171), Ben Pernaselli from Sayre (220).

In the Open division, former Athens state champ David White took the title at 135 and Owen Maryott of Ulster won at 295.
