SAYRE — Loyalsock scored eight runs in the top of the third inning to blow open a tie game en route to an 18-1 five-inning win over Sayre here Thursday afternoon in non-league baseball action on Ralph Hendershot Field at Riverfront Park.
After Loyalsock scored a run in the top of the first inning, the Redskins answered with a run in the home half of the frame.
With one out, junior Quinn Hanafin stroked a single to left field that sent sent senior James Esposito to third base. Both runners took an extra base on a miscue in the outfield to tie the game at 1-1.
The Lancers took advantage of two Sayre errors and three base on balls, as well as five hits to plate eight runs to take a 9-1 lead.
Loyalsock added five runs in the fourth inning and four more in the fifth.
Sayre, meanwhile, did not have a hit after Nic Ficarro’s two-out single in the second inning.
Esposito singled and scored a run, and Hanafin and Ficarro singled to account for Sayre’s three hits.
Chase Cavanaugh earned the win for the Lancers, allowing an unearned run on three hits, while striking out four and walking none in four innings.
Freshman Nick Barone doubled twice, scored two runs, and had five RBI, and Cavanaugh stroked three singles and had three RBI to pace Loyalsock’s 15-hit attack.
Sayre, now 2-3, will play at Tioga Saturday at 10:30, then at Waverly at 1 p.m. as part of the wounded Warrior Baseball Classic.
