ATHENS — Shane Fuhrey fired a two-hitter to outduel a pair of Athens pitchers and lead Wyalusing to a 3-1 win here Thursday afternoon in NTL Large School Division baseball action.
Despite the loss, the Wildcats maintain a two-game lead over Towanda and Wellsboro with two league games remaining to play.
The Rams scored a pair of runs in the top of the third inning on just one hit — a lead-off single by Fuhrey, thanks to an error, and a passed ball — to take a 2-0 lead.
Athens answered with a run in the home half of the inning on an RBI single by senior Kaden Rude, but couldn’t muster any more offense against Fuhrey.
The Wildcats left three runners on base, including runners in scoring position in the fifth and sixth innings.
Fuhrey fanned seven and walked two, while allowing one unearned run. He threw just 80 pitches in seven innings.
Keegan Rude was tagged with the loss for the Wildcats, allowing two unearned runs on two hits, while striking out four and walking one in three innings.
Senior Nate Kennedy allowed an unearned run on one hit, while striking out three and walking four in four innings of relief.
Kaden Rude singled and drove in one run, while senior Nick Watkins singled, and Keegan Rude scored one run to account for Athens’ offense.
The Wildcats, now 13-3, return to action Saturday morning when they host a non-league tilt against Thomas A. Edison.
