ATHENS — Xander Burch turned in a dominant performance on the mound, leading Thomas A. Edison to an 8-0 win over Athens here Saturday in non-league baseball action.
Burch walk the opening batter of the game, then carried a no-hitter into the seventh inning, before senior Nate Kennedy ripped a line-drive single up the middle for the Wildcats’ only hit of the game.
Burch fanned 14 and threw 97 pitches in the seven-inning, complete-game victory.
Burch also drove in the game’s first run in the top of the first inning with an RBI groundout to second base. The Spartans added a second run without the benefit of a hit, taking advantage of two walks, an error, and a hit batsman to make it 2-0.
After a lead-off walk to Kaden Rude in the home half of the first inning, Burch retired 13 straight batters until senior Joe Parshall reached on a dropped third strike with one out in the fifth inning.
The Spartans took control of the game with four runs in the top of the third inning. The key blows in the inning were an RBI triple by Logan Peters, RBI doubles by Garret Mortimer and Xander Burch, and an RBI single by Jared Slaven.
Tyler Lewis and Slaven delivered RBI singles in the fourth inning to give the Spartans an 8-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning.
Peters had three hits, including a pair of triples, scored one run, and drove in one run to pace Edison’s 14-hit attack, while Tom Kane doubled and singled, and scored two runs, and Slaven singled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI.
Senior Ethan Witherow was tagged with the loss, allowing two unearned runs on one hit, while striking out one and walking two in 1 1/3 innings.
Junior Brady Smith pitched 3 2/3 innings in relief, allowing six runs — five earned — on 10 hits, while striking out two and walking four.
