IAC GIRLS TRACK & FIELD: SMITH, WHEELER, 3,200-METER RELAY NOTCH WINS FOR WAVERLY AT DAY 1 OF LEAGUE MEET (19 PHOTOS) (2019-05-16)

T-BURG "” Waverly junior Cora Smith, and senior Kennedy Wheeler were the Valley's only individual winners in Day 1 of the IAC Track & Field Championships.

Smith, who also ran on a winning relay, won the 1,500-meter run in a time of 4:47.5, edging out Notre Dame ace Alyssa Walker by 0.7 seconds.
 
Wheeler won the discus with a toss of 92-feet, 11-inches, and Waverly junior Marissa Eisenhower was eighth at 71-feet, 4-inches.

Smith teamed with juniors Sheridan Talada and Elizabeth Fritzen, and freshman Olivia Nittinger to win the 3,200-meter relay in a time of 10:06.98.

Talada was third in the 2,000-meter steeplechase in a school-record time of 7:54.26.

Waverly junior Melina Ortiz placed third in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:00.93, while Nittinger was 11th in 1:05.84.

Waverly junior Alyssa Simonetti qualified for the finals, and finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.81 seconds.  Tioga junior Mackenzie Macumber finished ninth at 18.07 seconds, and freshman Mariah Nichols was 10th at 18.09 seconds.

Tioga freshman Julia Walsh was 10th in the pole vault at 7-feet, and Tioga junior Jocelyn Bradley was 12th at 6-feet.

Waverly junior Sadie VanAllen finished 11th in the 100-meter dash in 14.1 seconds, while Tioga sophomore Hannah Barton was 13th in 14.19 seconds, and Waverly freshman Aubrey Akins was 15th in 14.56 seconds.

PRELIMS
The Waverly foursome of Sadie VanAllen, Stephanie Hyland, Sarah Uhl, and Sydney Nierstedt qualified for the finals in the 400-meter relay Large School finals with a time of 54.55 seconds - the fifth-fastest in the division.

The Tioga quarter of 8th-grader Reese Howey, Walsh, freshman Mariah Nichols, and junior Mackenzie Macumber finished fifth in the Small School division, and qualified for the finals of the 400-meter relay with a time of 56.39 seconds.

The finals of the 400 relay will be held Friday.

Day 2 action begins Friday at 4:45 p.m.
