VALLEY SPORTS REPORT: WAVERLY'S SMITH EARNS GIRLS "SWIMMER OF THE YEAR" HONORS (2015-03-11)

THE VALLEY — Waverly senior Daylen Smith put the finishing touches on a stellar career with a brilliant performance in the postseason to earn the 2014-15 Valley Sports Report girls “Swimmer of the Year.”

During the regular season, she was Waverly’s top performer in leading the Lady Wolverines to a 9-3 record. She set a new Waverly pool record (55.48 seconds) in the 100-yard freestyle in the final home dual meet of her career.

She was the MVP at the IAC Championships with three gold medals and a silver medal. She won the 200-yard freestyle in a personal-best time of 2:04.34 and won the 100-yard freestyle in 55.95 seconds. She was also on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay and on the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay team.

Smith won four medals at the Section IV, Class C meet, including a pair of gold medals. She won the 100-yard freestyle and was on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay, while taking second in the 200-yard freestyle and third in the 400-yard freestyle relay.

Athens freshman Selkie Bishop swam in three events at the District 4 Championships and has been named the 2014-15 “Newcomer of the Year.”

Bishop finished 11th in the 500-yard freestyle and 12th in the 100-yard butterfly. She was also part of the fifth-place 400-yard freestyle relay.

At the NTL meet, Bishop finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and third in the 200-yard freestyle.

Taylor Lane, sophomore, Athens: Lane turned in a strong performance at the District 4 Championships. She finished fourth in both the 100-yard butterfly and the 100-yard backstroke, and swam on the fifth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and on the sixth place 200-yard medley relay.

At the NTL Championships, Lane was on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams. She was second in both the 200-yard IM and the 100-yard backstroke

Courtney Dukes, junior, Athens:
Dukes was a triple-winner at the NTL Championships, winning the 500-yard freestyle and being part of Athens’ winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays. She finished second in the 200-yard freestyle.

At the District 4 meet, she swam on the fifth-place 400-yard freestyle relay and on the sixth place 200-yard medley relay. Dukes was seventh in the 500-yard freestyle and was ninth in the 200-yard freestyle.

Kennedy Wheeler, 8th-grader, Waverly:
She was on the winning 200 free relay at Sectionals, as well as on the third-place 400 free relay and finished fifth in the 200-yard IM.

At the IAC meet, Wheeler won the 100-yard butterfly and was on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay team. She was also the second-place 400-yard freestyle relay and finished third in the 200-yard IM.

Kelcey Madigan, senior, Waverly: Madigan was on the winning 200-yard freestyle relay at Sectionals, as well as on the third-place 400-yard freestyle relay. She also finished fourth in the 500-yard freestyle and was 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke.

At the IAC meet, Madigan was on the winning 200-yard freestyle team and on the second place 400-yard freestyle relay. She was third in the 500-yard freestyle and sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Katie Phykitt, sophomore, Athens: Phykitt was on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relays at the NTL Championships. Individually, she finished third in both the 100-yard backstroke and 200-yard IM.

Phykitt was on Athens’ fourth-place 200-yard freestyle relay at the District 4 meet. She was also 10th in the 50-yard freestyle and 13th in the 100-yard backstroke.

Sarah Cuno, junior, Athens:
Cuno was on the winning 200-yard medley and 400-yard freestyle relay teams at the NTL Championships. She was second in the 50-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard freestyle.

At the District 4 meet, Cuno was part of the fourth-place 200-yard freestyle and the sixth-place 200-medley relay. She was also ninth in the 100-yard freestyle.

Relay of the Year: Waverly’s 200-yard freestyle relay foursome of Daylen Smith, Sage Burt, Kennedy Wheeler and Kelcey Madigan won Section IV gold in a time of 1:47.92.
