THE VALLEY — Athens senior Cody Jennings shined at the plate and on the mound, pitching the Wildcats to their first District 4 title in 20 years, and Tioga senior Parker Hendershot had a season for the ages to share Valley Sports Report’s 2017 “Baseball Player of the Year” honors.
On the mound, Jennings was 6-0 with a 1.07 ERA to also earn “Pitcher of the Year” honors. He fanned 64 and walked just 12, while allowing only 25 hits in 42 innings pitched. Opposing batters hit just .159 against him.
Jennings tossed a complete-game five-hitter in the Wildcats’ 3-2 win over Mifflinburg in the District 4, Class AAAA championship game.
At the plate, Jennings had a breakout season. He hit .588 with 40 hits in 68 at-bats, including nine doubles, one triple, and one home run. He had 24 RBI, scored 21 runs, stole 11 bases, and struck out just three times in 75 plate appearances.
Parker Hendershot hit .645 for the season, which ranks ninth all-time in New York State history. He also had eight triples this season, which ranks 10th all-time.
He tied his own school record with 49 hits, including 12 doubles, eight triples, and five home runs, in 76 at-bats. He also scored 41 runs, had 45 RBI, seven stolen bases, and struck out just five times in 93 plate appearances. He had a .688 on-base percentage, and a 1,211 slugging percentage, for an 1.899 OPS.
For his career, Parker Hendershot hit .521 with a school-record 165 hits and 20 triples, which is sixth all-time in state history. He also had 45 doubles, and nine home runs, 125 RBI, and 154 runs scored. He struck out just 14 times in 382 plate appearances.
Waverly sophomore Bradey Roney made an immediate impact for the Wolverines, pitching in nearly every “big game” this season, posting a 6-0 record with a 0.84 ERA to earn the 2017 VSR “Newcomer of the Year.”
Roney pitched 50 innings this season, allowing 27 hits and walking just 15 batters, while fanning 47. Opposing batters hit just .153 against him.
At the plate, Roney hit .262 (16 hits in 61 ABs) with three doubles, 13 RBI, and 17 runs scored.
Sayre freshman Quinn Hanafin also made an immediate impact for the Redskins with clutch hit after clutch hit through the District 4 championship season to earn “Offensive Newcomer of the Year.”
Quinn Hanafin hit .464 with 32 hits in 69 at-bats, including 10 doubles. He had 27 RBI, scored 20 runs, and struck out just 7 times in 74 plate appearances.
Sayre junior Nate Sweet was a force defensively behind the plate for the Redskins, limiting the opposition’s running game with a strong arm and quick release, while being lauded by his coaches and pitchers for his game calling.
Sweet, also adept at blocking balls in the dirt, is the 2017 “Defensive Player of the Year.”

Nate Sweet, junior, Sayre: As good as he was defensively (see above), he also had a strong season at the plate. Sweet hit .449 with 31 hits in 69 at-bats, including nine doubles and one home run. He had 20 RBI, scored 17 runs, and struck out just three times in 80 plate appearances.

Pierce Hendershot, sophomore, Tioga: A slick-fielding shortstop with a high baseball IQ, Pierce Hendershot hit .486 with 36 hits, including 13 doubles and two triples, in 74 at-bats. He scored 42 runs, had 32 RBI, and stole five bases. He had a .577 on-base percentage, and a .716 slugging percentage for a 1.293 OPS.
On the mound, Pierce Hendershot was 4-4 with a 3.49 ERA. He struck out 55 and walked 19 on 49 innings pitched, while allowing just 43 hits.
P: Jordan Rockwell, junior, Sayre: Rockwell posted a 1.30 ERA on the season, striking out 47 and walking just 15 in 48 1/3 innings on the mound. He allowed 43 hits.
At the plate, Rockwell hit .414 with 29 hits, including two doubles. He scored 26 runs, and had 11 RBI.
Connor Hanafin, junior, Sayre: A good defender at the hot corner, Hanafin hit .500 on the season with 33 hits, including nine doubles, two triples, and one home run. He had 31 RBI, scored 20 runs, and struck out just five times in 79 plate appearances.

1B: Matt Williams, senior, Sayre: A dynamic fielder at first base, Williams battled a foot injury for part of the season, but still hit .450 with 18 hits (and 15 walks) in 40 at-bats, including two doubles. He also scored 14 runs, and had 13 RBI.
2B: Dylan Cooney, senior, Waverly: A good defender at second base, Cooney had a breakout season offensively. He hit .394 with 28 hits in 71 at-bats, including one double and one triple. He scored 24 runs, stole 12 bases, and had 12 RBI.
SS: Pierce Hendershot, sophomore, Tioga: See above.
3B: Parker Hendershot, senior, Tioga: See above.
OF: Brendyn Stillman, senior, Waverly: A strong-armed outfielder with a great deal of range, Stillman hit .380 on the season with 27 hits in 71 at-bats, including 12 doubles, one triple, and three home runs. He scored 25 runs, had 13 RBI, 18 stolen bases, and struck out just six times in 85 plate appearances.
Stillman walked 13 times and had a .471 on-base percentage with a .704 slugging percentage for a 1.175 OPS.
Stillman also recorded three saves in nine appearances on the mound. He posted a 1.62 ERA wth 14 strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings. He allowed six hits and six walks.
OF: Cory Stivason, junior, Athens: A center fielder with a great deal of range, Stivason hit . 393 on the season with 24 hits in 61 at-bats, including eight doubles and one triple. He scored 22 runs, had 19 RBI, and stole 13 bases.
OF: Nate Bennett, senior, Waverly: A good defender in right field and a clutch hitter, Bennett hit .311 with 19 hits in 61 at-bats, including 11 doubles. He had 19 RBI, scored 15 runs, and 12 stolen bases.
