ATHENS — Athens built a 6-0 lead, then held off a sixth-inning Towanda rally for a 6-4 win here Saturday afternoon in pool play at the Gilbert Brown 8U Tournament, hosted by the Athens Little League.
Athens, playing as the visiting team, took a quick 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning in a rally highlighted by a two-run single by Duncan Thetga.
Leading 4-0, Athens tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the fifth inning on RBI singles by Kamdyn Wheeler and Thetga.
Towanda plated four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and had the potential tying run at the plate, but Wheeler (Athens’ third pitcher in the game) registered a strikeout to end the game.
Thetga singled twice, scored a run, and had three RBI to pace Athens at the plate, while Eli Hicks singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run, Wheeler singled and scored two runs, and Conner Davidson added a single.
Hicks started on the mound for Athens. He fanned six and walked one in 2 1/3 innings of hitless ball. Thetga struck out eight and allowed one hit in 2 2/3 innings of relief.
Athens, now 2-0 in pool play, returns to action Monday at 5 p.m. against Waverly.
