HORSEHEADS — The Valley Storm 14U travel softball team went 3-0 in pool play to earn the second seed in bracket play, but dropped a 5-3 decision in the quarterfinals to the Liverpool Blue Reign here Saturday at the Fury Tournament.
Valley Storm 12, Pa. Lights Out 0
Athens’ Megan Bennett fired a two-hitter to lead Valley Storm to a 12-0 win over Pa. Lights Out in the opening game of pool play Friday evening.
Bennett struck out seven and walked two in a complete-game win.
Valley Storm scored twice in the first inning on a steal of home by Horseheads’ Sophie Smith, and an RBI single by Corning’s Jenna Case.
The Storm added four more runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-0 lead. Sophie Smith and Tioga’s Michaela Webb opened the inning with back-to-back singles, and a series of wild pitches, as well as Shelby Smith getting hit by a pitch, and a walk to Case, led to four runs.
Waverly’s Megan Lee singled twice and scored one run, and Tioga’s Giovanna Rossi singed, scored a run, and had two RBI to lead the Storm at the plate, while Case singled, scored two runs, and drove in two runs, and NEB’s Emma Repsher singled and drove in two runs.
Sophie Smith singled, scored three runs, and stole three bases in the win, while Tioga’s Michaela Webb singled and scored two runs, Shelby Smith scored two runs, and stole two bases, and Athens’ Harley Sullivan scored a run.
Valley Storm 14, Baldwinsville Swarm 7
Valley Storm jumped out a big early lead, and scored in every inning en route to a 14-7 win over the Baldwinsville Swarm in pool play Saturday morning.
Shelby Smith ripped three doubles, scored one run, and had five RBI, Sophie Smith had three hits, including two doubles, and scored three runs, and Bennett had three hits, including a double, and scored one run to pace the Storm’s 19-hit attack.
Rossi homered and doubled, scored two runs, and had three RBI in the win, while Waverly’s Hali Jenner doubled and singled, and drove in a run, Repsher singled twice, scored two runs, and had two RBI, and Webb singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in a run.
Tioga’s Mackenzie Luther singled, scored one run, and drove in a run for the Storm, while Case singled and scored a run, Sullivan scored a run, and Lee drove in a run.
Bennett closed out the game for the Storm, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out five and walking none.
Valley Storm 6, Rochester Lady Lions 2
Bennett tossed another two-hitter to lead the Storm to a 6-2 win over the Rochester Lady Lions in the final game of pool play Saturday morning.
Bennett allowed two runs on two hits in five inning, while striking out nine and walking two to earn her second win in the tournament.
Bennett helped her own cause in the top of the second inning with a two-out RBI single to plate Rossi, who sparked the rally with a one-out single.
The Storm added three runs in the third inning on a two-run single by Shelby Smith and an RBI single by Case.
Sophie Smith doubled and singled, scored one run, and stole two bases, and Sullivan singled twice and scored a run to pace the Storm’s 12-hit attack, and Repsher doubled and singled.
Shelby Smith singled, scored a run, and had two RBI in the win, while Jenner singled and drove in two runs, Case and Bennett each singled and knocked in a run, Rossi singled and scored two runs, Webb added a single, and Lee scored a run.
Liverpool Blue Reign 5, Valley Storm 3
The seventh-seeded Liverpool Blue Reign scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to overcome an early deficit en route to a 5-3 win over second-seeded Valley Storm here Sunday morning in the quarterfinals.
The Storm took a quick 2-0 lead on a two-out solo home run by Shelby Smith, which was followed by a double by Case and an RBI single by Rossi.
Blue Reign cut the lead in half with a run in the home half of the first inning, then took a 5-2 lead with four runs in the fourth inning.
Rossi led off the top of the fifth inning, and scored on a one-out RBI single by Repsher to trim the deficit to 5-3.
Bennett was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs — four earned — on 10 hits and two walks. She struck out one.
Rossi singled twice, scored one run, and drove in a run to lead the Storm’s seven-hit attack, while Smith smacked a solo home run, Repsher singled and drove in a run, Case doubled and scored a run, Sophie Smith doubled, and Luther added a single.
The Storm, now 25-10-2 on the season, returns to action this weekend at a tournament in Olean.
