OLEAN, N.Y. — The Valley-base Valley Storm 14U travel softball team won its four games at the Synergy Summer Showcase here over the weekend, before falling to the eventual champ in the semifinals.
Valley Storm went 3-0 in pool play to earn the fourth seed in the tournament. Storm beat the fifth-seed Synergy, 8-1, in the semifinals, then dropped an 8-0 decision to Rochester-based Smash it Sports in the semifinals.
Storm is now 29-11-2 on the season, and will play later this week at Nationals in Maryland.
Valley Storm 9, Kinzua Lightning 1
Valley Storm scored four runs in the top of the first inning and cruised to a 9-1 win over Wellsville, N.Y.-based Kinzua Lightning in the opening game of pool play Saturday afternoon.
Corning’s Jenna Case’s two-RBI single was the key blow in the rally, and Horseheads’ Sophie Smith added an RBI single.
NEB’s Emma Repsher delivered an RBI single in the third inning to give the Storm a 5-0 lead.
The Storm added two more runs in the fourth inning to take a 7-0 lead, then tacked on two more runs in the fifth to push its lead to 9-1.
Case earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing one run on three hits in five innings, while striking out six and walking two.
Sophie Smith doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run to lead the Storm at the plate, while Bennett singled twice and scored a run, and Repsher singled twice and and had two RBI.
Case singled, scored a run, and drove in two runs in the win, while Waverly’s Megan Lee and Athens’ Harley Sullivan, who stole two bases, singled and scored a run, Tioga’s Giovanna Rossi singled, scored two runs, Shelby Smith singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, and Tioga’s Mackenzie Luther drove in a run.
Valley Storm 7, Diamond Dogs 6
Valley Storm scored six runs in the top of the fifth inning — all with two outs — to rally from a 4-1 deficit, then held on for a 7-6 win over the Wellsville, N.Y.-based Diamond Dogs Saturday evening in pool play action.
Luther and Sophie Smith stroked back-to-back one-out singles to spark the decisive rally. With two outs, Shelby Smith smacked an RBI single to left field, and Rossi followed with a groundball RBI single to left field to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Case belted a two-run double to put the Storm up 5-4, then Repsher delivered a two-RBI single that would prove to be the difference in the game.
The Dogs hit four consecutive singles to open the home half of the fifth inning to trim the Storm’s lead to 7-6. With runners on second and third and no outs, Bennett recorded a strike out, then fielded a squeeze bunt and cut down a runner at the plate to escape the jam and preserve the win.
Sophie Smith was 3-for-3 with a double, two runs scored, and two stolen bases to lead the Storm at the plate, while Repsher doubled and singled and drove in two runs, and Rossi and Shelby Smith each singled, scored a run, and drove in a run.

Bennett earned the win in relief, allowing two runs on four hits, while striking out one in two innings of work.
Valley Storm 8, Lakeshore Eclipse 2
Valley Storm jumped out to a quick lead and cruised to an 8-2 win over Buffalo-based Lakeshore Eclipse Saturday night in pool play action.
Bennett, Shelby Smith and Rossi stroked consecutive one-out singles in the top of the first inning, and Case delivered all three with a double off the wall to give the Storm a 3-0 lead.
The Storm took advantage of four walks in the top of the second, and an RBI single by Case to extend their lead to 5-0.
Case doubled and singled, and had four RBI to lead the Storm at the plate, while Rossi singled twice, scored a run, and had two RBI, and Bennett singled twice, scored a run, and drove in a run.
Sophie Smith singled and scored a pair of runs in the win, while Shelby Smith singled and scored a run, Sullivan added a single, Luther scored two runs, and Jenner crossed the plate once.
Bennett earned the win in the pitcher’s circle, allowing two runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two.
Valley Storm 8, Synergy 1
Bennett scattered five hits to lead Valley Storm to an 8-1 win over Olean-based Synergy in the quarterfinals Sunday morning.
Bennett struck out seven and walked just one in a complete-game six-inning effort. She threw just 68 pitches.
Case had three hits, including a double, scored two runs, and drove in a run, and Bennett stroked three singles, scored one run, and knocked in a run to pace the Storm’s 12-hit attack.
Sophie Smith belted a pair of doubles, scored two runs, stole two bases, and drove in a run in the win, while Sullivan singled twice, scored one run, and knocked in a run, Repsher singled and drove in two runs, and Rossi singled and scored a run.
With the score tied at 1-1, Bennett helped her own cause with an RBI single in the top of the third.
Repsher delivered a two-run single in the fourth inning to give the Storm a 4-1 lead.
Case belted an RBI double in the fifth inning, and scored on an RBI single by Sullivan to make it 6-1.
Smash It Sports 8, Valley Storm 0
Emily Phelan fired a perfect game to lead Smash It Sports to an 8-0 win over Valley Storm in the semifinals Sunday morning.
Phelan struck out 13 in a five-inning complete-game effort. She threw 68 pitches.
