ATHENS Athens rallied twice to pull out a 13-7 decision over Sayre here Wednesday evening in the championship game of the Gilbert-Brown 8U baseball tournament, hosted by the Athens Little League.
Sayre plated four runs in the top of the fourth inning, but Athens answered with five runs in the home half of the first to take a 5-4 lead.
Sayre regained the lead with two runs in the top of the second, but Athens answered again this time with three runs to take an 8-6 lead.
Sayre scored one run in the top of the third to trim the deficit to 8-7, then Athens took firm control with four runs in the bottom of the frame.
Conner Davidson was 3-for-3 with two runs, and two RBI, and Joseph Dickerson doubled and singled, scored a pair of runs, and had two RBI to lead Athens at the plate, while Eli Hicks singled twice, scored two runs, and drove in a run, and Kamdyn Wheeler singled, scored a run, and had two RBI.
Peter Bertsch singled, scored a run, and drove in a run in the win for Athens, while Alex McQuay singled and had two RBI, Sam Cheresnowksy singled and scored a run, Zac Fisher scored two runs, and Duncan Thetga, Jacob Shores, and Caleb Lennon each crossed the plate once.
Davidson earned the win in relief for Athens, allowing one run on one hit, while striking out five and walking four. Thetga earned the save, striking out seven in 2 1/3 innings of no-hit relief.
Chase Wheeler singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, and Cameron Rossi singled and scored a run to account for Sayres two hits in the game, while Brady Flynn had three RBI, and Mason Apgar, and Justin Koenig each scored a run, and drove in a run.
