NEWARK VALLEY  Newark Valley defended its home floor with an epic five-set win over Waverly here Tuesday night in IAC South Large School volleyball action.

The Lady Cardinals opened with a 25-23 win in the first set, but the Lady Wolverines bounced back with a 25-17 win in the second set.

Newark Valley earned a hard-fought, 25-22, decision in the third set, but Waverly again responded with a strong effort in a convincing 25-10 win in the fourth set.

The Lady Cardinals closed out the match with a 25-17 win in the decisive fifth set.

Sophomore Adrianah Clinton led Waverly with 15 service points, while junior Sydney Meyers had 14 points, including five aces, seven kills, and 15 digs, senior SIera Kirk had 12 points (five aces) and 19 digs and senior Abby Searles had 12 points and 19 digs.

Sophomore Paige Lewis registered nine kills and one block for the Lady Wolverines, while French exchange student Lea Guillatin recorded eight kills, and senior Katie Goodwin had 21 setter assists.

Waverly, now 3-1, returns to action Thursday when it hosts Newfield.

JV: Waverly, now 4-0, won a hard-fought 2-1 decision over Newark Valley in the junior varsity contest. The junior Wolverines won the first set 26-24 and third set 25-19, sandwiched around the junior Cardinals; 25-22 win in the second set.

Morgan Adams led Waverly with 18 points, including six aces, five kills, and five digs, while Izzy Garvey had nine points, and Lexy Streeter added seven points.
