IAC GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: WAVERLY WINS FIRST DIVISIONAL CROWN SINCE 1996 (24 PHOTOS) (2017-10-10)

NEWARK VALLEY — Waverly had five of the top 11 finishers and won its first team title since 1996 here Tuesday afternoon at the IAC South Divisional championship cross country meet.

Waverly had 31 placement points to edge runner-up Newark Valley by one point, while Edison was third with 75 points, and SVEC was fourth with 95.

Watkins Glen’s Kai Sutterby won the event in a time of 21:14.0, while Newark Valley’s Kristina Knight (21:28.7) and Marissa Silba (21:44) finished second and third, respectively.

Junior Brandi Welch paced the Lady Wolverines with a fourth-place finish in a time of 22:07, while sophomore Sheridan Talada placed sixth in 22:34.3, junior Regan Vaughn was eighth in 22:38.2, freshman Sidney Tomasso was 10th in 22:45, and 8th-grader Olivia Nittinger finished 11th in 23:05.3.

Paige Ackley finished 19th in 23:40.3 for Waverly, and sophomore Elizabeth Fritzen was 20th in 24:29.5.

Sophomore Paige Grube finished 17th in a time of 23:25.1 to lead SVEC, while Brianna Noviello was 23rd in 25:19.8, freshman Sydney Brown was 24th in 25:27.7, junior Delaney Fatcheric was 29th in 26:41.7, and senior Lillian Jensen was 30th in 26:58.3.

Freshman Faith Burrowes was 34th in a time of 28:18 to lead Tioga, while senior Lauren Tinney was 37th in 29:01.1, freshman Kindra Wessels was 42nd in a time of 33:00.6, and senior Jenna Steele was 45th in 36:22.1.

Junior Zayta Hall finished 28th in a time of 26:36.6 for the Lady Wolverines, while sophomore Gretchen Sowle was 35th in 28:19.9, senior Deanna Chandler was 38th in 29:28.3, sophomore Rachel Ovedovitz was 43rd in 22:01.1, and sophomore Morgan Lee was 44th in 34:22.2.

SVEC’S MARSH, TIOGA’S BURROWES FINISH 1-2 IN MODIFIED RACE

SVEC’s Mya Marsh and Tioga’s Kate Burrowes finished 1-2, and Waverly’s Michaela Clymer was fourth in the modified girls race.

Marsh clocked in at 10:43.4, edging out Burrowes by just 0.3 seconds, while Clymer crossed the finish line in 11:08.3.

Tioga’s Mariah Nichols finished seventh in 11:37.4, and Waverly’s Michaela Lauper was 11th in 12:43.9.
