TOWANDA — Fourteen Sayre Rec. wrestlers placed in the top four of their respective weight classes here Sunday at the Towanda Tournament.
Jamisen Gardner improved to 25-1 on the season en route to a first-place finish, and Chase Wheeler won the first title of his career.
“Chase Wheeler) is wrestling very tough,” said Sayre Rec. coach Donnie Barrett. “His bracket was loaded with tough kids, and he came out on top. I couldn’t be happier for him.”
Brady Flynn and Jordan Brown each finished second in their weight classes, while Treyton Barrett, William Vosburgh, Ian Garrison, Jacob Woodruff, Jayden Kutt, and Kayden Kithcart each finished third.
Clyde Blieler, Nolan Raupers, Lyam Morningstar, and Jayden Morningstar each finished fourth in their weight class.
“A few of the kids wrestled their best tournament of the season, even though they didn’t come away with first place,” said Barrett. “Some of our beginners wrestled well and picked up their first wins for the season; that’s a strong statement especially at such a tough tournament.
“This was certainly the toughest tournament we’ve wrestled in all year, there were a lot of tough kids in each bracket.
“Physically and technique-wise, we can’t say enough about this young group of wrestlers,” Barrett added. “These guys are getting tough at the right time of the year. We are making huge improvements week after week, which should put us right on schedule for the postseason.”
Sayre Rec. returns to action Sunday at Wyalusing.
