SAYRE — Sayre survived an ice-cold first half from the field, and rallied from a 10-point deficit late in the second half to top North Penn-Liberty, 49-45, here Thursday night in NTL Small School Division boys basketball action.
Senior Jake Ressler knocked down a jumper from the free-throw line in the opening minute of the game, then nailed another jumper from nearly the same spot in the closing seconds for Sayre’s only four points in the first quarter.
In between, NP-L scored 10 straight points, and led 10-4 after the first eight minutes.
The second quarter wasn’t much better for the Redskins, who shot 15 percent (5 of 33) from the field in the first half, and trailed 21-11 late in the stanza, and 21-13 at the intermission.
Junior Gage Carnrike and senior Jordan Rockwell scored four points apiece in the third quarter, and junior James Esposito drained a 3-pointer to fuel a 15-5 run to give the Redskins a 28-26 lead heading into the final eight minutes.
Sayre extended its lead early in the fourth quarter on 3-pointers by Rockwell and Esposito, then made 11 of 15 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Esposito, who knocked down a pair of 3-pointers, led a balanced Sayre attack with 13 points, while Rockwell, senior Ryan Murrelle, Carnrike, and sophomore Corbin Brown scored eight points apiece, and Ressler added four points.
Sayre, now 4-8, snaps a five-game losing streak with the win, and is scheduled to host Williamson Saturday.
