TROY — Athens used a 19-4 second-quarter blitz to blow open the game en route to a 49-15 rout of Troy here Tuesday night in NTL Large School girls basketball action.

Senior Emily Lunger scored four points in the first half, and freshman Kayleigh Miller canned a 3-pointer to help Athens to an 11-3 lead.

In the second quarter, senior Kara Chapman knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line, and Lunger added seven points as the Lady Wildcats stretched their lead to 30-7 at the half.

Lunger scored five points in the third quarter to fuel an 11-2 spurt that extended the Athens lead to 41-9 entering the final eight minutes.

Lunger had 16 points, six rebounds, and four steals, and Chapman had 14 points, six rebound, and three assists to lead Athens, while junior Sophie Adams added eight points, a team-high seven rebounds, and three steals, Miller recorded five points, six steals, and three rebounds, and sophomore Haley Barry chipped in with four steals and three rebounds.

Athens, now 14-6, returns to action Saturday at Lourdes Regional in Shamokin in a 1 p.m. JV start.

JV: Athens won the junior varsity contest, 29-16, led by Rachel Stephens’ 12 points.
