|IAC BASEBALL: SOUTH SENECA EDGES S-VE, 4-3 (2018-05-14)

OVID, N.Y. — Senior Nassir Whitley pitched six dominant innings, then stranded the tying run on second base to preserve South Seneca’s 4-3 win over S-VE here Monday afternoon in non-league baseball action.
South Seneca scored runs in the bottom of the first and third innings to take a 2-0 lead, but the Panthers cut the deficit in half in the top of the fourth inning.
Junior Mandel Davis singled, and advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt by Billy Hall. With two outs, Brandon Roe flared an RBI single to right field to score Davis.
The Falcons added runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend its lead to 4-1.
Brendan Cowl and Roe led off the top of the seventh inning with consecutive singles, and senior Zac Sherwood ripped a one-out, two-run double to left field to trim the deficit to 4-3.
Whitley was able to escape further damage with a strikeout, and a groundout to end the game.
Roe singled twice, scored one run, and drove in one run, and Sherwood doubled and drove in two runs to lead S-VE’s seven-hit attack, and Davis and Cowl each singled and scored.
Senior Bryant Sexton and Ryan Nelson each singled for the Panthers.
Sherwood was tagged with the loss, allowing three runs — one earned — on three hits, while striking out 12 and walking two. Senior Jacob Grier allowed an unearned run in 1 1/3 innings.
Whitley allowed three runs on seven hits, while striking out six and walking two in a complete-game, seven-inning outing to earn the win.
S-VE is 4-11 on the season.
