ATHENS ó Athens scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning and coasted to a 16-6 win over Sayre here Saturday afternoon in the semifinals of the District 15 Little League Minors Division baseball playoffs.

After Sayre loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score in the top of the first, Athens took advantage of four hits, including an RBI single by Matthias Welles to start the scoring and a three-run triple by Welles to make it 10-0, five walks and two errors to take an 11-0 lead.

Welles tripled and singled, scored three runs, and had four RBI to lead Athens at the plate, while Graham Wanck singled, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Cooper Robinson singled, scored one run, and drove in two runs.

Eli Hicks singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run in the win, while Elijah Hobday singled and scored two runs, Karson Sipley singled, scored three runs, and drove in a run, Rodney Chapman singled and drove in a run, and Connor Davidson and Kamdyn Wheeler each scored a run, and drove in a run.

Welles also earned the win on the mound, allowing one hit, while striking out three and walking three in two scoreless innings of work. Hicks closed out the game with an inning of one-hit scoreless relief with one strikeout.

Sayre, which advanced to the semifinals with a 12-7 win over Tunkhannock, was led at the plate by Jackson Varner, who had two hits, a run scored, and an RBI, and Ronin Ault, who doubled and singled, and scored one run. Brady Flynn scored a run and drove in a run for Sayre.

Athens plays the winner of the Allegheny Mountain and Wellsboro Thursday in the winnerís bracket final, while Sayre takes on the loser of Troy and Canton Monday in the consolation bracket.
