WAVERLY — Joey Tomasso shined on the mound and at the plate to lead Waverly to a 4-0 win over Horseheads here Tuesday evening in the completion of a District 6 Little League baseball game suspended by rain Monday.

With the win, Waverly improves to 5-1 in pool play, and can lock up the second seed in the playoffs with a win Thursday when it hosts Elmira Heights. which will enter the game at 1-5.

Tomasso limited Horseheads to two hits over 5 2/3 innings to earn the win. He fanned nine and walked two. Jake VanHouten retired the only batter he faced to finish off the game.

Jay Pipher walked to lead off the game, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single by Joey Tomasso to give Waverly a 1-0 lead.

Waverly led 1-0 after the first inning when the rains came Monday night.

The pitcher’s dominated Tuesday.

Brayden Talada singled to lead off the fourth inning, and Tomasso followed with a double — Waverly’s only two hits in the first five innings of the game — to put runners on second and third with no outs, but the next three batters struck out to leave them stranded there.

Tomasso allowed only a lead-off single in the third inning, and a two-out single in the fourth. Only one Horseheads base runner reached second base.

Waverly added three insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning.

Pipher led off with a single, and scored on a one-out RBI double by Tomasso, who scored on an RBI single by Jake VanHouten to make it 3-0. Charlie Larrabee capped the scoring with a two-out RBI single to plate VanHouten.

Tomasso doubled twice, scored one run, and had two RBI to lead Waverly at the plate, while Pipher singled and scored two runs, VanHouten singled, scored one run, and drove in a run, and Talada and Jacob Benjamin each added a single.

Big Flats, which handed Waverly its only loss in pool play, is 6-0 and can lock up the top seed with a win Thursday.
