ATHENS — Athens scored five runs in the bottom of the third inning to overcome an early deficit en route to a 12-4 win over Troy in pool play here Sunday morning in the Gilbert-Brown Memorial 8U Baseball Tournament.

Troy scored two runs in the top of the second inning to take a 3-2 lead, but Athens scored five runs in the home half of the third inning and five more in the fourth inning to take a 12-3 lead.

Sam Cheresnowsky singled, scored three runs, and drove in two runs, and Cartyr Cockcroft singled, scored one run, and had three RBI to account for Athens’ two hits.

Jacob Saxon scored three runs, while Shea Davidson scored twice and drove in a run, Peter Bertsch scored a run, and drove in a run, Joe Dickerson had two RBI, and Griffin Smith and Theron May each drove in a run.

Dickerson started on the mound for Athens, allowing three runs — two earned — on one hit, while striking out six and walking four in two innings.

Cockcroft earned the win with two scoreless innings of two-hit relief with three strikeouts, and Cheresnowsky closed out the game — allowing one run on two walks with two strikeouts.

Athens, now 2-0 in pool play, returns to action Tuesday when it hosts Waverly at 5 p.m.
