ATHENS Waverly scored four runs in the top of the first inning on its way to a 6-1 win over Athens in pool play action here Tuesday evening at the Gilbert-Brown Memorial 8U Baseball Tournament.
Both team managed just one hit in the game, but Waverly benefitted from nine more walks (15-6) in the win.
Griffin Walter struck out six and walked four in 2 1/3 innings of hitless work to earn the win for Waverly, while Hayden Roskow allowed one run on one hit, while striking out three and walking two in 1 1/3 innings of relief. Jack Pipher finished off the game by fanning all four batters he faced.
Waverly took advantage of four walks, two errors, and an RBI single by Cooper Hugo to take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
Sam Cheresnowsky stroked a one-out single and later scored Athens only run of the game.
Hugo singled and had two RBI to pace Waverly at the plate, while Roskow and Axel Murray scored two runs, and Pipher and Collin Wheeler each scored one run.
Jacob Saxon, Cheresnowsky, and Cartyr Cockcroft, who struck out three batters apiece, combined to strike out nine and walk 11 over the first four innings. Shea Davidson and Griffin Smith pitched the fifth inning, striking out the side and walking four.
Waverly, now 2-0, wraps up pool play Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. against Troy, while Athens, now 2-1, squares off with Tioga-Lawrenceville at 5:30 on the softball field on Pennsylvania Avenue.
