VIRGINIA BEACH — Athens’ Brian Courtney won three matches Friday to advance to the quarterfinals of the 120-pound weight class in the Sophomore Division of the National High School Coaches Association High School Nationals here at the Convention Center.

Waverly freshman A.J. Burkhart won his first three bouts Friday before falling into the consolation bracket in the round-of-16.

Athens sophomores Brock Horton and Gage Cannavino and Sayre sophomore Matt Ingrassia each won two matches Friday before falling into wrestlebacks.

SAYRE — Nearly every high school soccer player has the same dream — to one day get a chance to play at a Division I college.

For most, that dream never becomes a reality. The few that get the opportunity often spend years trying to impress college coaches.

Sayre’s Chloe Tracy is a little different. The Redskins star will get a chance to play college soccer at Binghamton University, and she already has made her commitment as a sophomore. ...more

TROY — The East, led by Towanda’s Noah Huff and Athens’ Brandon Fauver, raced out to a 14-point halftime lead en route to an 82-72 win over the West here Monday night in the NTL Seniors Game at the Troy Commons Building.

Huff knocked down a pair of 3-pointers and scored 12 points and Fauver added 11 points, while Towanda’s Nick Place drained a trio of 3-pointers as the East took a 47-33 lead into the halftime locker room. (The game was played in two 20-minute halves.)

NTL GIRLS BASKETBALL: WHITE TEAM PREVAILS IN SENIOR ALL-STAR GAME (4 PHOTOS) (2015-03-23)

TROY — Instead of dividing the NTL seniors into teams by the old method — East vs. West — or the new one — Division 1 vs. Division 2, the powers-that-be in the NTL decided to try to even things out by choosing teams.

It worked perfectly as the White team — consisting of players from Troy, North-Penn Mansfield, Williamson and Wellsboro — pulled out a hard-fought, 45-42, win over the Black team, which fielded players from Athens, Wyalusing, Canton, Towanda and North Penn-Liberty. ...more

TROY — The best seniors from around the NTL will come together at the Troy Commons Building tonight for their final high school basketball game — the annual NTL Seniors Game.

Athens will be represented in the girls game at 6 p.m. by Jensen Dunkling, Danielle Dougherty, and Mackenzie Warner.

At 7:30 p.m. in the boys game, Brandon Fauver will represent the Wildcats, while Marshall Higley and Joey Galizia will represent Sayre.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Penn State’s first two games in its initial Big-10 series of the season were postponed Friday and Saturday, but the Nittany Lions did open their home season with an 11-1 win over Canisius here Wednesday at Medlar Field.

Sayre grad Taylor Skerpon played a key role in the win. He was 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs scored and two stolen bases as Penn State improved to 3-13 on the season. ...more

ENDICOTT, N.Y. — The Upstate New York Chapter of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame recently inducted eight new members and also honored Waverly grad Dr. Thomas Martin with its “Outstanding American Award.”

Martin, a 1985 Waverly graduate, was a two-time Section IV champ (1983-84 and ’84-85) and wrestled collegiately at St. Lawrence University. ...more
