In the immortal words of Steve Martin, it was “a wild and crazy” Friday afternoon of baseball and softball action for Valley teams.

There were 151 runs scored in eight games, three of which were decided by one run and a fourth game that was suspended by darkness after 11 innings, on a frigid and windy day.

LERAYSVILLE — Sayre pounded out 27 hits and received two strong pitching performances en route to a pair of wins and the championship of the Northeast Bradford Tournament here Saturday.

Sayre opened the day with a 12-3 win over NTL Small School foe Williamson in the semifinals, then rolled over Susquehanna, 11-1, in six innings in the championship game. ...more

After all the Sayre Little team paraded on to the field, Little League Board president Mike Cron was the emcee for the morning, introducing last year’s Sayre Little League all-stars, who received trophies and other hardware in recognition of their accomplishments in 2014. ...more

WYALUSING — Freshman Breanna Gambrell was a three-time winner and placed second in a fourth event to lead Athens to a second-place finish Friday here at the annual Lasagna Track & Field Invite.

Pittston Area won the team title with 94.5 points, while Athens tallied 83 points and Lakeland was third with 66 points. Sayre finished 17th with 10 points.

WYALUSING — Sayre senior Joey Galizia and Athens sophomore Kalen Keathley claimed gold Friday at the annual Lasagna Track & Field Invite

Galizia won the triple jump with a mark of 42-feet, 1-inch and was third in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 5-inches.

Kalen Keathley won the 100-meter dash in a tie of 11.28 seconds. He was fourth in the 200-meter dash in 23.69 seconds and Waverly’s Jacob Goble was seventh in 24.27 seconds. ...more

SAYRE — On a day most would consider too cold for baseball, Sayre played like it never wanted its game against Northeast Bradford to end.

Three times in their final at-bats, the Redskins rallied to keep their hopes alive and eventually it was darkness that ended the game with score tied at 9-9 after 11 innings in NTL baseball action here on a cold and windy Friday afternoon. (The game will be completed at a later date.)

SAYRE — Liberty raced out to a 10-1 lead en route to a 17-7 win over Sayre here on a cold and blustery Friday afternoon in NTL softball action at Riverfront Park.

After two runs in the top of the first inning and two more in the third gave them a 4-1 lead, the Lady Mountaineers scored six runs in the top of the third to blow the game open. ...more

The Tioga baseball team earned a signature win for 2015 and in the process, senior Peter Simmons tied the school record for career wins with his 21st.

Simmons showed mental toughness, in shaking off a couple of early errors that led to a pair of unearned runs in the first inning, and used his impeccable control to hold an Edison lineup that pounded Waverly for 13 runs last week to just six hits over the final six innings. ...more

Athens ace Tyler Forbes was every bit as good advertised Monday in his start against Troy.

The problem for the Wildcats was that Troy’s Kyle Schucker was a bit better.

Forbes was untouchable for the majority of the game, returning the first 17 batters he faced. The first hit he allowed was a flare to right field and the second was a 25-foot roller up the third-base line resulting from a swing intended to send it 300-plus feet over the left-field fence.< ...more
