ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Lucas Horton tossed a one-hitter and faced just two batters over the minimum to lead Sayre to a 10-0 five-inning win over Big Flats here Tuesday evening in the opening game of the Jamie Ungerland Wooden Bat Tournament.
Lucas Horton struck out 11, including 10 of the last 12 batters he faced, and walked none in complete-game effort to earn the win. He threw just 65 pitches.
Lucas Horton helped his own cause in the bottom of the first inning with a two-out RBI single to plate Tanner Green, who led off the frame with a single.
Sayre increased its lead to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Jackson Hubbard led off the frame with a double, and scored on an RBI single by Gabe Horton. After a wild pitch, Gabe Horton scored on an RBI single by Colton Watkins.
With one out, Will Crossett ripped an RBI double to make it 4-0. Kegan Hayford capped the rally with a two-out RBI single.
In the bottom of the fifth, Aiden Ennis and Crossett drove in runs, then Lucas Horton delivered the walk-off RBI single to end the game via the the 10-run “mercy” rule.
Lucas Horton stroked three singles and had two RBI, and Crossett doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI to pace Sayre at the plate, while Watkins doubled and singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run
Zack Garrity singled twice and scored a run in the win, while Gabe Horton singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run, Hayford singled and drove in a run, Green singled and scored a run, Kyler Setzer and Hubbard each doubled and scored a run, and Aiden Ennis knocked in a run.
Big Flats’ only hit was a first-inning single. The only other batter to reach base came via a dropped third strike in the third inning.
Sayre returns to action Saturday morning against the winner of the Horseheads-Cal Ripken game.
