In other action, Waverly needs a win to qualify for the Class C playoffs in Section IV, while Sayre and Athens both take on NTL powers in divisional match-ups.

TIOGA CENTER, N.Y. — The Tigers were the three seed in the Section IV playoffs, but they knew that sixth-seeded Greene would be a tough test.

“It’s more of a fluke that they were a six seed than it would be for them to be state championship contenders,” Tioga coach Heather Klossner said.

And, Greene looked the part of a state power on Wednesday coming out strong and defeating the Tigers 3-1. ...more

THE VALLEY — The postseason swings into high gear this afternoon with four playoff soccer games.

The only home game features the Tioga boys hosting IAC rival Watkins Glen, while the Waverly boys are on the road at Chenango Forks. The Sayre girls and boys are also on the road and will play a doubleheader at Hughesville.

In the only non-playoff game, the Sayre volleyball team closes out play in 2014 with a home game. ...more

ALFRED, N.Y. — A trio of Tioga grads — senior Kay Pfleghardt, junior Jess Ramsey and freshman Bryanna Godfrey — will make the trip, along with their Alfred State teammates, to the United States Collegiate Athletic Association championships next week at SUNY Canton.

Alfred State will open play in Pool A along with Florida College, Berea College, Marygrove and Tennessee Temple. ...more

TIOGA CENTER — Tioga stopped an S-VE two-point conversion attempt with 14 seconds remaining in the game to preserve a 36-35 win and earn a trip to the "C" Division Super Bowl in the Southern Tier Youth Football Conference.

Tioga will now face Union-Endicott, which beat Chenango Forks, 24-12, in the "C" Division Super Bowl at S-VE High School Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Aside from Waverly's loss at Lansing, it was a pretty good Friday night for the Valley football teams.

In Tioga, Jesse Manuel established himself as Section IV's all-time leading ground gainer — topping Notre Dame great Joel Stephens' mark of 4,715 yards.

 With as many as five or six games still possibly ahead of him, as well as his entire senior season, Manuel will approach and possibly pass 7,000 yards for his career — a mark that will likely stand for a long, long time. ...more

HORSEHEADS — Tioga held its own in the rugged Horseheads Classic here Saturday before being swept by Class AA powerhouse and eventual champion Baldwinsville in the opening round of championship play here at the Horseheads Middle School.

Tioga went 4-2 in pool play. After losing their first two sets to Horseheads, the Lady Tigers answered with two wins over Francis Lewis, then beat Harbrosfield — 26-24 and 26-24 — in a pair of tightly-contested sets.< ...more
