Wood, a standout pitcher for the Lady Tigers, is a second-team selection, while Barto was a third-team all-state choice.

THE VALLEY — Athens freshman Breana Gambrell was a triple-winner in her first varsity meet this season and never slowed down, capping her season with a pair of PIAA medals to earn the Valley Sports Report “Female Athlete of the Spring.”

Gambrell. who is also “Newcomer of the Spring,” qualified for States in four events after winning three gold medals and a bronze at the District 4 Championships.

It was quite a season for Valley baseball teams with all four qualifying for postseason and three of them winning at least one game in the playoffs.

Tioga ended its season in the New York State Class C semifinals, while Athens and Sayre both played in District 4 semi-final tilts.

THE VALLEY — Waverly junior Josh Mastrantuono pulled everything together at the perfect time to win a state title in the pole vault and earn the 2015 “Male Track & Field Athlete of the Year.”

Mastrantuono, who was consistently vaulting 12-feet, 6-inches through the season, cleared a personal-best 14-feet to finish second at the Section IV Championship. He duplicated his efforts in tough conditions at the state meet to claim gold. ...more

Both teams entered play Sunday morning at 2-0 in pool play and the Wild Things’ earned the top seed and the “home-field” advantage with a 4-2 win in the final game of pool play. ...more

TIOGA CENTER — IAC South Small School Division champion and eventual state semi-finalist Tioga had six players honored with first-team all-division status and three more received honorable mention recognition in recent voting by the league’s coaches.

Seniors Peter Simmons, Lucas Richardson and Adam Layman, as well as junior Jesse Manuel, sophomore Parker Hendershot and freshman Mitchell Taylor were first-team picks, while juniors Jake Evanek, Adam Zwierlein and Gabe Hoose were on the honorable mention list. ...more
