ELMIRA — For the second time in five days, Sayre’s Ryan Murrelle and Tioga’s Sam Taylor won titles on the Central N.Y. Junior PGA Tour, this time here Tuesday at the Soaring Eagles Golf Club.
Murrelle won the 18U division with a 1-under par round of 70, while Taylor won the 15U division with a 1-over par 73.
Murrelle logged six birdies in the round, including five consecutive birdies, to top Binghamton’s Trevor Jones by seven strokes on the 6,345-yard, par-71 course.
Murrelle logged his first birdie on the 169-yard, par-3 fourth hole to take a one-stroke lead over Jones.
Murrelle’s run began with a birdie on the 322-yard, par-4 8th hole, then closed out the front nine with a birdie on the 400-yard, par-4 9th hole for a 34 on the par-35 front nine.
Murrelle opened the back nine with a birdie on the 518-yard, par-5 10th hole, then followed it up with birdies on the 336-yard, par-4 11th hole, and the 402-yard, par-4 12th hole to close out his streak with a six-stroke lead.
Murrelle finished the back nine with a trio of bogeys for a 36, but stretched his advantage to seven strokes.
Murrelle is currently second in the Player of the Year standings in the 18U Division.
Taylor took the lead for good with a birdie on the 461-yard, par-5 2nd hole, then stretched his advantage to three strokes with a birdie on the 387-yard, par-4 3rd hole.
Taylor led by four strokes after seven holes, but Addison’s Daniel Ames birdied the eighth and ninth holes to shoot a 37 on the front nine — just one stroke behind Taylor’s 36.
Ames recorded another birdie on 10 to tie the match, but carded a double-bogey on 11 to fall two shots off the pace.
Ames birdied the 12th hole to pull within one stroke, but Taylor’s birdie on the 410-yard, par-4 16th hole gave Taylor a two-shot lead and he was able to close out the win.
Taylor trails Ames by just 10 points in the “Player of the Year” standings in the 15U Division, despite having played in one fewer tournament.
