YOUTH SOFTBALL (14U): VALLEY STORM FINISHES POOL PLAY 2-1 AT EASTERN FASTPITCH WORLD SERIES (2017-07-19)

SALISBURY, Md. — The Valley Storm 14U travel softball team went 2-1 in pool play here Wednesday at the USSSA Eastern Fastpitch World Series at the Snow Hill Softball Complex.
The Storm returns to action in double-elimination bracket play Thursday morning at 8 a.m. against West Manchester Pride.
Valley Storm 4, Mid-Hudson Rebels 2
Valley Storm scored four runs in the top of the third inning to pull out a 4-2 win over the Lake Katrine, N.Y.-based Mid-Hudson Rebels Wednesday morning in the opening game of pool play.
With the Rebels leading 1-0, Horseheads’ Sophie Smith and Athens’ Megan Bennett stroked back-to-back one-out singles, and Shelby Smith followed with an RBI single to tie the game at 1-1. Tioga’s Giovanna Rossi then slammed a three-run home run to left field to put the Storm ahead 4-1.
The Rebels countered with a run in the home half of the third inning, but Bennett shut them down over the final three innings to preserve the win.
Bennett scattered six hits over six innings, while striking out three and walking one to earn the win.
Athens’ Harley Sullivan singled twice, and Rossi homered and drove in three runs to lead the Storm at the plate, while Shelby Smith singled, scored a run, and drove in a run, and Sophie Smith and Bennett each singled and scored a run.
Waverly’s Hali Jenner doubled for the Storm in the win, while Waverly’s Megan Lee, and NEB’s Emma Repsher each added a single.
Valley Storm 12, East Coast Titans Red 9
The Valley Storm scored nine runs in the top of the second inning to pull out a wild, 12-9, three-inning decision over the Maryland / Delaware-based East Coast Titans Red Wednesday afternoon in pool play.
The Titans scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 4-1 lead, but it was short-lived as the Storm exploded to rally for a 10-4 lead.
The Storm’s rally featured a two-run single by Jenner to cap the nine-run outburst, RBI singles by Tioga’s Mackenzie Luther, Sophie Smith, and Rossi, and four bases-loaded walks.
The Titans answered with five runs in the home half of the frame to trim the deficit to 10-9, but the Storm added a pair of insurance runs in the third to seal the win.
Rossi was 3-for-3 with three RBI to lead the Storm at the plate, while Shelby Smith and Sullivan each singled, scored two runs, and drove in a run, and Jenner singled, scored a run, and had two RBI.
Luther singled, scored a run, and drove in a run, while Corning’s Jenna Case doubled and scored a run, Bennett singled and scored a run, Sophie Smith scored two runs, and drove in a run, Lee scored a run and knocked in a run, and Repsher crossed the plate once.
Bennett closed the game with 1 2/3 innings of one-hit relief with four strikeouts.
C.J. Force Elite 5, Valley Storm 3
The Farmingdale, N.J.-based Central Jersey Force Elite scored four runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 5-1 lead and held on for a 5-3 win over Valley Storm Wednesday afternoon in the final game of pool play.
An RBI double by Sullivan in the top of the second inning to give the Storm a 1-0 lead, but the Force Elite answered with a run in the home half of the inning, and four more in the third to take a 5-1 lead.
Repsher belted a one-out, two-run double in the top of the fourth inning to trim the deficit to 5-3 and put runners on second and third base, but both runners were stranded there.
Luther led off the fifth inning for the Storm, but was stranded there. The Storm also left Case, who reached via a one-out walk, stranded on first base in the sixth inning.
Repsher doubled and had two RBI, and Sullivan doubled and drove in a run to lead the Storm’s six-hit attack, while Cases singled and scored a pair of runs.
Shelby Smith singled and scored a run, and Luther and Bennett each added a single for the Storm
Storm was tagged with the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in five innings of work, while striking out seven and walking one.
