SALISBURY, Md. — The Valley Storm 14U travel softball team earned two more wins here Thursday to advance to the “sweet 16” at the USSSA Eastern Fastpitch World Series at the Snow Hill Softball Complex.
Athens’ Megan Bennett tossed a four-inning no-hitter in an 11-0 win over West Manchester Pride in the opening game of bracket play, then the Storm pounded out 11 hits in a 7-3 win over Blue Thunder 03 in the round-of-32.
The Storm returns to action Friday morning against the Pa. Strikers.
Valley Storm 11, West Manchester Pride 0
Bennett struck out four and allowed just one runner to reach base in a no-hitter to lead the Storm to an 11-0 win over West Manchester Pride.
The Storm jumped ahead with two runs in the top of the first inning on back-to-back two-out RBI doubles by Tioga’s Giovanna Rossi and Corning’s Jenna Case.
The Storm added three more runs in the third inning on a two-out RBI single by Athens’ Harley Sullivan, and a two-RBI double by NEB’s Emma Repsher to make it 5-0.
The Storm put the game away in the top of the fourth on consecutive RBI singles by Bennett, Horseheads’ Shelby Smith, and Rossi to make it 8-0.
Case followed with a two-run single to extend the lead to 10-0, and Repsher capped the rally with a two-out RBI single to make it 11-0.
The only runner to reach base for the Pride came on a throwing error.
Case doubled and singled, scored one run, and had three RBI, and Rossi doubled and singled, scored two runs, and had two RBI to lead the Storm at the plate, while Bennett singled twice, scored three runs, and drove in a run, and Shelby Smith singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in a run.
Repsher doubled and singled, and had three RBI in the Storm’s 13-hit attack, while Waverly’s Megan Lee and Horseheads’ Sophie Smith each singled and scored a run, and Sullivan singled, scored one run, and drove in a run.
Valley Storm 7, Blue Thunder 3
Valley Storm jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead en route to a 7-3 win over Blue Thunder in the round-of-32 Thursday afternoon.
Sophie Smith led off the game with a ringing triple to center field. After an infield single by Bennett left Sophie Smith at third base, Shelby Smith lined a single to center field to give the Storm a 1-0 lead.
In the second inning, the Storm did its damage with two outs. Repsher ripped a double to lead off the frame, and Waverly’s Hali Jenner drew a walk. After a sacrifice bunt by Waverly’s Megan Lee moved the runners to second and third, Tioga’s Mackenzie Luther worked a walk to load the bases.
With two outs, Bennett helped her own cause with a two-run single to make it 3-0, and Shelby Smith followed with an RBI double to make it 4-0.
Shelby Smith doubled and singled and had two RBI, and Bennett singled twice and had two RBI to lead the Storm at the plate, while Sullivan singled twice and drove in a run, and Repsher doubled and singled, scored one run, and knocked in a run.
Case doubled and scored a run in the win, while Sophie Smith doubled, stole two bases, and scored two runs, Rossi singled and scored a run, and Luther and Jenner each scored a run.
Bennett earned her second win of the day, allowing two earned runs on seven hits and one walk in a complete-game seven-inning effort.
