ENDICOTT — The Ernie Davis Section IV Senior all-star football game will pit the best from East against the best from the West here at Ty Cobb Stadium Wednesday night.

Waverly will be send five players — Joey Peters, Jeff Klossner, Zack Saxon, Alex Volpe, and Mac Brown — into the fray, while the Tioga duo of Sam Burns and Dylan Babcock were both invited to play. ...more

THE VALLEY — Sayre senior Nick Sweet and Waverly junior Kelsey Frank are the 2014 Valley Sports Report "Cross Country Runners of the Year."

Sweet ran in his third PIAA Championship meet recently, while Frank had her second run at the New York State Championships.

Sweet and Frank were also the VSR "Runners of the Year" in 2013.

In the game story for Friday's Tioga-Randolph game, I wrote that defense wins championships.

Randolph has proved that adage true in each of the last two seasons and is one win away from its third straight Class D state title.

The Tigers Express kept rolling last Friday with more than 600 yards in total offense in a not-as-close-as-the-final-score-indicates, 46-22, win over Section III champ Dolgeville in the quarterfinals of the New York State Class D football playoffs.

It marks the fourth time the four-time defending Section IV champs have rolled over the Section III representatives and into the state semifinals.

OWEGO — Senior Daylen Smith may have missed out on a trip to States, but she capped off her career with a strong performance here Saturday at the Section IV, Class C girls swimming championships.

Smith had four top-three finishes, including a pair of gold-medal finishes, in leading a young Lady Wolverines team to a fourth-place finish.
