THE VALLEY — The postseason swings into high gear this afternoon with four playoff soccer games.

The only home game features the Tioga boys hosting IAC rival Watkins Glen, while the Waverly boys are on the road at Chenango Forks. The Sayre girls and boys are also on the road and will play a doubleheader at Hughesville.

In the only non-playoff game, the Sayre volleyball team closes out play in 2014 with a home game. ...more

THE FINAL WORD: THOUGHTS ON THE FOOTBALL WEEKEND AND THE SOCCER PLAYOFFS (2014-10-19)
Aside from Waverly's loss at Lansing, it was a pretty good Friday night for the Valley football teams.

In Tioga, Jesse Manuel established himself as Section IV's all-time leading ground gainer — topping Notre Dame great Joel Stephens' mark of 4,715 yards.

 With as many as five or six games still possibly ahead of him, as well as his entire senior season, Manuel will approach and possibly pass 7,000 yards for his career — a mark that will likely stand for a long, long time. ...more

IAC GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY: FRANK, UHL TURN IN TOP-10 FINISHES AT MARATHON INVITATIONAL (2014-10-18)

MARATHON — Junior Kelsey Frank and senior Kaylee Uhl turned in top-10 finishes Saturday to lead the Waverly girls to a seventh-place finish in the unseeded division at the rugged Marathon.

West Genesee claimed the team title with 95 points and Johnson City was second with 154 points. Waverly tallied 198 points. ...more

IAC BOYS CROSS COUNTRY: WAVERLY'S TRAUB TURNS IN STRONG PERFORMANCE AT MARATHON INVITATIONAL (2014-10-18)

MARATHON — Waverly senior Collin Traub turned in a strong performance here Saturday at the rugged Marathon Cross Country Invitational.

Traub finished fourth in the boys unseeded race in a time of 18:04.4, but he was the only Waverly boys in the top 90 as the Wolverines finished 21st  in the 23-team field. ...more

Week 8 of the high school football season is upon us and once again all four of the Valley teams are in action Friday night with only one — Tioga — at home.

Week 7 saw my first errant pick since Week 2, but I vow to make up for it with another perfect week in Week 8.

THE VALLEY — Week 7's installment of "Football Friday" is nearly guaranteed to be historic as Tioga junior Jesse Manuel is just 73 yards shy of breaking Section IV's all-time career rushing record.

The Tigers have the only home game of the weekend, while Waverly travels to Lansing in search of its fourth consecutive division title, Athens travels to Cowanesque Valley seeking its second straight win, and Sayre looks to bounce back with a road trip to Montgomery. ...more

For Athens graduate Hannah Harvey-Sampson, running is something she has always known.

She was a high school runner at Athens and a college runner at Ithaca.

Harvey-Sampson graduated from Ithaca in May, however, one person was missing from her graduation ceremony.

Just two weeks before her graduation Harvey-Sampson’s stepfather Bill Shaut died from gastrointestinal cancer.

For one team it's over already and that is unfortunate.
