BALDWINSVILLE — Tioga sophomore-to-be Sam Taylor won the 15U Division of the two-day Junior PGA Championship Qualifier here Wednesday afternoon at the Radisson Greens Golf Club.
Taylor, who finished fifth overall, edged John Gruninger of Syracuseby virtue of a tiebreaker. Both finished with a two-day total of 151 on the 7,010-yard, par-72 course, but Taylor edged Gruninger by two strokes on the back nine Wednesday for the win.
Gruninger led by four strokes after two holes on Tuesday, but Taylor pulled even after a birdie on the 410-yard, par-4 6th hole. Gruninger shot a 38 on the front nine and led by three strokes at the turn.
He shot a matching 38 on the back for a 76, but Taylor recorded a pair of birdies on the back nine — on the 384-yard, par-4 12th hole, and the 556-yard, par-5 18th hole — and shot a 1-under par 35 to pull even.
On Wednesday, Gruninger shot a 1-under par 35 on the front nine and led by two strokes, but faltered with a 40 on the back, while Taylor shot a 38. Taylor’s only birdie on Wednesday came on the first hole, a 473-yard, par-5.
On Sunday, Taylor won a section qualifier for the New York State Boys & Girls Junior Championships at the Links at Hiawatha Landing in Apalchin.
Taylor shot a 1-over par 73 to beat Lance Johnson of Binghamton by four strokes.
Waverly’s Alex Tomasso finishes second in age group
Waverly junior-to-be Alex Tomasso bounced back from a rough first day with an 83 on Wednesday to finish second in the 18U Division.
Tomasso shot a 94 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 177 — 27 strokes behind Lindsay May of Auburn, who is a two-time NYSPHSAA champion.
