ATHENS — Athens and Sayre won hard-fought decisions here Monday evening to advance to Wednesday’s championship game of the Gilbert-Brown 8U Tournament, hosted by the Athens Little League.
Athens 11, Towanda 9
Athens raced out to an 8-0 lead after three innings, then scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pull out an 11-9 win Towanda and earn a trip to the title game.
Athens scored four runs in the first inning and four more in the third inning to build an 8-0 lead, but Towanda scored four runs in the top of the fourth and five in the fifth to rally for a 9-8 lead.
In the bottom of the fifth inning, Duncan Thetga and Conner Davidson stroked back to back singles to start the rally, and Peter Bertsch delivered both runners with a two-run single to give Athens a 10-9 lead. Joseph Dickerson added an insurance run with an RBI single.
Eli Hicks, who earned the win, pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the sixth inning to preserve the win.
Thetga started on the mound for Athens and retired all eight batters he faced, including seven by strikeout.
Thetga had three hits, including a triple, scored three runs, and drove in a run, and Davidson singled twice, scored two runs, and had two RBI to lead Athens at the plate, while Kamdyn Wheeler singled twice, scored two runs, and knocked in a run, and Sam Cheresnowsky singled twice and scored a run.
Bertsch singled, scored a run, and had two RBI in the win, while Dickerson doubled and drove in a run, Alex McQuay singled and drove in a run, and Zac Fisher and Hicks each scored a run, and knocked in a run.
Sayre 7, Waverly 6
Sayre scored three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 7-4 lead, then held on for a 7-6 win over Waverly to advance to the championship game Wednesday.
With the score tied at 4-4, Justin Koenig belted a two-run triple, and scored on an RBI single by Chase Wheeler.
Koenig tripled and singled, and scored two runs, and Wheeler doubled and singled, and scored two runs to lead Sayre at the plate, while Cameron Ross and Mason Apgar singled twice and scored a run.
Caleb Simons, Ahren McCarthy, Jamison Gardiner and Tucker Green each singled in the win, and Rhiley McGaughey scored a run.
Noah Vanderwark singled twice and scored a run to lead the Waverly at the plate, while Rylan Yeakel singled twice, and Rhylee Stotler and Eric Lewis each singled and scored a run.
Jack Pipher and Griffin Walter each singled for Waverly, and Brandon Bennett and Hayden Roskow each scored a run.
