ELMIRA HEIGHTS — Sayre scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a 9-8 win over Elmira Heights here Tuesday evening in the winner’s bracket finals of the 22nd annual Elmira Heights Wood Bat Tournament.
Elmira Heights scored five runs in the top of the third inning to take a 6-2 lead, and scored two more in the fifth to stretch its lead to 8-4.
After Sayre reliever Mason Hubbard struck out the side in the top of the sixth inning, Tanner Green and Will Crossett singled early in the rally in the home half of the inning, and Zach Garrity ripped a bases-loaded RBI single to close the gap to 8-6.
Elmira Heights then intentionally walked Lucas Horton, who hit home runs in his first two at-bats of the game, to force home a run to trim the deficit to 8-7, but the strategy back-fired when Kegan Hayford and Hubbard both worked walks to force home the tying and winning runs.
Lucas Horton belted two home runs, scored two runs, and had three RBI, and Garrity had three hits, including a home run, scored three runs, and drove in two runs to power Sayre at the plate.
Green singled twice and scored a run in the win, while Thomas Morley and Crossett each singled and scored a run, and Aidan Ennis scored a run.
Sayre will face the winner of the consolation bracket Saturday morning at 10 a.m.
