YOUTH BASKETBALL: NINE TIOGA ATHLETES WIN AGE GROUPS AT KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS 'MANWARING FREE THROW CHAMPIONSHIP' (2019-01-07)

TIOGA CENTER - The Tioga County Knights of Columbus crowned its champions here Saturday in the 5th Annual Dan Manwaring Free Throw Championships at the Tioga Central High School gymnasium - and all nine were from the Tioga Central School District.

The nine champions, ages 9 to 14, achieved council level champion status in the event held in memory of longtime youth basketball coach Dan Manwaring, and sponsored by the Blessed Trinity Council #251 of Tioga County.

The winners are as follows (free throws made / free throws attempted) :

GIRLS
9-year-old: Madeline Burrowes (2/15);
10 year-old girls: Reagan Foley (7/15);
11 year-old girls: Emily Burrowes (7/15);
12 year-old girls: Lily Messler  (4/15);
13 year-old girls: Aliza Browne (5/15);
14 year-old girls: Abby Foley (11/15).

BOYS
10 year-old boys: Jackson Bombard (12/15)
11 year-old boys: James Luther (8/15)
Luther made 3 of 5 free-throw attempts in a tiebreaker shootout to defeat Keagan Zeller of Elmira.
14 year-old boys: Josh Reis (11/15)
Reis made 5 of 5 free-throw attempts in a tiebreaker shootout to defeat Ryan Fendick of Johnson City for his third KofC Manwaring championship.

Each of these winners will advance to the chapter level championships in Rochester in late February / early March with an eye on moving on to the regionals in Syracuse in March, and ultimately to the state championships at West Point in April.
