THE VALLEY - A trio of basketball games and a key IAC Large School bowling match highlight Tuesday's action in the Valley.
The Waverly bowlers host Union Springs / Port Byron at the Valley Bowling Center this afternoon, while the Waverly and Sayre girls, and the Tioga boys are at home on the hardwoods.
Union Springs / Port Byron (28-12) at Waverly (24-12), 3:30 p.m. @ Valley Bowling Center: The Wolverines and Wolves are both 1 game behind front-running Watkins Glen in the loss game.
US / PB averages a division-best 836 pins per game, while Waverly averages 815 pins.
Waverly 8th-grader Zach Vanderpool leads the IAC with a 213.8 average, and junior Derrick Canfield is third in the league with a 204.3 average, while Mitchell Hamel is the only US / PB bowler in the top 12, fifth at 203.7.
In the first meeting, US / PB won 3-1 at home.
Union Springs / Port Byron (39.5-0.5) at Waverly (31.5-4.5), 3:30 p.m. @ Valley Bowling Center: The Lady Wolves lead the Lady Wolverines by 4 games in the Large School division with Watkins Glen a distant third - 15 1/2 games off the pace.
Waverly averaged a league-high 780 pins per game, while US / PB is second at 768 pins.
Waverly junior Mackenzie Plouse leads the IAC with a 187.9 average, and 8th-grader Victoria Houseknecht is third at 173.7, while US / PB had four bowlers in the top 11, led by Collen Jump (second at 180.7) and Keri Jesmer (third at 179.1).
US / PB won 3.5 points in their first meeting at Aurora Lanes in Auburn.
Lansing (1-9) at Waverly (9-0), 5:30 p.m. JV start: The state-ranked Lady Wolverines are coming off a 70-31 win over S-VE, while the Lady Bobcats are coming off a loss to Southern Cayuga.
Tioga (2-8) at Southern Cayuga (8-2), 5:30 p.m. JV start: The Lady Tigers are coming off a 46-40 loss to Notre Dame Friday, while the Lady Chiefs rolled over Lansing.
Athens (5-3) at Cowanesque Valley (1-5), 6 p.m. JV start: The Lady Wildcats are coming off a 37-23 win over Canton Thursday, while the Lady Indians dropped a 35-34 decision to Montgomery Saturday.
Williamson (1-5) at Sayre (5-4), 6:30 p.m. (varsity only): The Lady Redskins are coming off a 58-44 win over Wyalusing Thursday, while the Lady Warriors dropped a 38-15 decision to Northern Potter Saturday.
Southern Cayuga (4-5) at Tioga (5-6), 6 p.m. JV start: The Tigers are coming off a 46-40 win over Northeast Bradford Saturday night, while the Chiefs dropped a 68-49 decision to Lansing.
Waverly (5-4) at Lansing (6-4), 5:30 p.m. JV start: The Wolverines are coming off their second straight loss since Scott Woodring's injury - a 49-38 loss to Thomas A. Edison, while the Bobcats topped Newfield, 59-54, Saturday.
Waverly (9-0) at Watkins Glen, 4:30 p.m.: The unbeaten Wolverines are coming off a 132-39 non-league win over Greene, while the Senecas dropped an 84-75 decision to Dryden.
