WESTFIELD, Pa. - Athens jumped to an early lead, but Cowanesque Valley battled back and used a 15-6 fourth-quarter run to pull out a 41-32 win here Tuesday night in NTL girls basketball action.
Sophomore Kayleigh Miller knocked down a 3-pointer and scored seven points in the first quarter, and junior Haley Barry and sophomore Rachel Stephens added buckets to lead Athens to an 11-6 lead after the first eight minutes.
The Lady Indians trimmed the deficit to two points, at 18-16, at the half, and pulled even, at 26-26, heading into the final eight minutes.
Cowanesque Valley jumped ahead early in the fourth quarter, then made just 7 of 17 free throws down the stretch, but it was enough to seal the win.
Miller led Athens with 15 points and four rebounds, while Barry had nine points and three rebounds, and freshman Caydence Macik added four points, four rebounds and one blocked shot.
Junior Avery Priester chipped in with four rebounds, four assists, and three steals for the Lady Wildcats, and senior Sophie Adams grabbed five boards.
Makayla Vargeson and Kamren Short scored led 11 points apiece to lead CV.
The Lady Wildcats, now 5-4, hosts crosstown rival Sayre Thursday.
